Can a 17 year old take out a mobile phone contract

My son will be paying for it and I don't want the contract in my name.

I'm pretty sure you need to be 18 so if you're not putting it in your name, then they'll need to be on PAYG.

No they need to be 18 to get credit.

No, but even at 18, they may not pass the credit check. We wanted my DS's new mobile to go in his name just after he turned 18.

We were advised by Tesco that he would definitely get a SIM-only contract, but they couldn't guarantee a more expensive contract until they did a credit check.

We therefore bought the handset as a birthday/xmas present and he got the SIM-only contract.
