i'm terrible with money and end up spending on stupid things for me and DC. I've decided I'm going to put a stop to it in 2017.

Anyone got any great tips for saving?

I've found out about tips like imagining that you could choose either to buy what you were going to buy, or take the money. Might try that.

I also saw this in the paper - www.uswitch.com/mobiles/news/2016/12/new-hsbc-iphone-app-helps-you-save-money/

Then did a bit of research then found this one - withplum.com/

Anyone tried these yet? Getting desperate and they might be the only option to save me from myself!

Withdraw cash at the start of each week and leave it at home. Take out just enough for planned spends. That way you just can't overspend as you don't have the money. I've been doing this for a while now and cut my spending right down.

I found doing the food shop online worked out cheaper as you only buy what you need. Delivery slots can be around £5 but if you're willing to wait in for four hours you can get them for a quid!

when buying things i work out how often they will be used over a year and how much that costs per use and then decide if i need to buy it or if its a good purchase.
i.e the shoes i bought for work were £55 and i wear them nearly everyday so they cost me just over a £1 for one week
the dress i like is £40 but i will wear it once this year and then maybe year after next for christmas party (not 2 yrs in a row). makes me think about the things i already have and unless i really need this new dress should i buy it. it doesnt always work but it makes me stop and think.

I also see things i like and then walk away, if i am still thinking about it a week later then i go back for it (if its sold out its not meant to be)

i also like to set targets in my savings...aim for £X this month and next month save and extra £X on top i have little goals and a big one.

at the moment we are saving for our wedding. total cost was too much to deal with mentally so i was saving for the parts - £x for dress, paid for now £x for photos, now £x for venue finally i am saving for £x for honeymoon....this wedding will be totally paid for with savings and no borrowing.

imagining what you can buy instead is brilliant tip. do i want these things which cost £50 in total or can i live without them and have an extra guest at wedding / put it towards the new bath panel / buy taps (doing up the home at the same time )
