Statutary sick pay?

DH was working on a fixed term contract which would have finished now. A few months before the end of his contract his MH deteriorated (he has long term MH issues) he was off sick for 4 weeks (full pay for 2, half pay for 2) then returned to work, wasnt coping and handed his notice in. His psychiatrist doesn't feel he should be working at the moment and has offered to write him a sick note. We know that he is not entitled to ESA as I earn over the threshold. My wage doesn't cover all our essential outgoings (particularly as we are still paying off debt accrued during previous periods when he has been unwell.) Its been suggested that he may be entitled to SSP as hes been working and paying NI for the last few years whilst he's been well. Just wondering if anyone knows where we stand on this as essentially he is unemployed but also psychiatrist is saying not fit to work.

SSP is an in work benefit. If he's not in work he won't be entitled to SSP. ESA would be the out of work equivalent.

And there's a contribution based version of ESA.
