Morning!

Did anyone see Watchdog and Martin Lewis on Good Morning Britain this morning? They were discussing energy providers and comparison sites. Think it's about time we looked at our provider/tariff.

Can anyone recommend their provider. Are some of the cheaper/smaller companies okay really?! Any tips?

Thank you :-)

Tariffs are.regional so I'm afraid such info is not.much use. Also the best tariff depends on your usage.

Energy prices are rising and the smaller firms may go bust. Make sure you don't pay in advance or build up credit.

I can tell you DO NOT sign up with First Utility...... EVER! Ever!

Lollollollol · 17/11/2016 19:59

I'd look on Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert. (Sorry MN ☺️).

Blossom4538 · 18/11/2016 09:15

Ok, I'll avoid First Utility, thanks!! Shock

You need to sign up to the MSE energy club www.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub
(MSE = Money Saving Expert, the website Martin Lewis set up). Enter your gas/electricity usage (should be on your bills) and they'll recommend cheapest tariffs. Switched from Atlantic to British Gas and saved £300 per year, I thought we were on the cheapest tariff but the energy club gets you access to fixed energy rates which means good savings. Free to join and a no brainer really.

Having completed over 1000 switches for our customers, there are a few FAQs that often put peoples' minds at ease.

  1. Just because you live in small flat and use little energy doesn’t mean you can’t save. You are charged a fixed fee every day for having energy supplied and this can often be significantly reduced.
  2. It’s important to realise that switching supplier is only a change in which company is buying energy for the national grid. What comes through your pipes and wires is exactly the same and requires no one to visit your house
  3. With most fixed energy tariffs ending after a year, you should be switching energy provider at least every 12 months. So if you haven’t switched for years, now is the perfect time to spend 15 minutes getting out your bill and switching supplier
  4. There are a few small suppliers to be avoided, but most energy companies regularly and reliably switch people to their tariffs. So unless they are getting 1 star reviews on trustpilot, do not be too easily scared by the small suppliers where the savings are the greatest.

We're with Octopus and the first time ever we have not switched away from them this year. Changing to them was seamless, their customer service is fantastic and we have gone into their standard variable rate as it is currently cheaper than their fixed rates.

I'm with Ecotricity as I want non carbon energy

Lucky78945 · 31/10/2018 17:07

I've recently switched to Octopus energy and would really recommend them - has been really smooth so far - they did handled the whole switch for me and they are very competitive in terms of price.

And I did a bit of searching and found a £50 off link so if you want to sign up then use the link below for a discount:

I've also recently switched to Octopus. So far so good. Their tariffs are very reasonable and their communicatons / service is excellent. I was previously with EDF and then Economy Energy - I'll never use them again. EDF I found overcomplicated everything, and the latter made error after error, and had no idea who I was even when I actually had an account with them. I instantly lost faith in them. Good luck!

MrMakersFartyParty · 06/11/2018 23:48

@Lucky78945 that's your refer a friend link, you get 50 quid too if someone signs up. Nothing wrong with that obviously, but why pretend you just found a random link?

Lucky78945 · 07/11/2018 09:19

@MrMakersFartyParty - I know what the link is, I was sharing it so I could help other people just like someone did for me.

Nothing wrong with trying to do something nice - or apparently according to you there is.

Please take your negativity elsewhere!!

SushiMonster · 07/11/2018 11:40

Just use U switch or other comparison website, with your actual usage stats (get from your a/c with current energy provider) to see what the best deal for you will be.

It is pointless being recommended a tariff as no one knows how much gas or electricity you use and different providers have different standing and unit charges.

You can get cashback on U switch at the moment as well with topcash back which I wish I had know 2 weeks ago when I switched!

@Lucky78945 it is disingenuous not to say that you will also receive £50 from the link, which may or may not influence your motivation to recommended octopus! Which is the point of them giving people the refer a friend links.

MrMakersFartyParty · 07/11/2018 12:33

Exactly @SushiMonster that's my point. You should tell someone if you're going to benefit from them signing up too, you pretended to have searched and found a random link.
