If your salary increases by £15k

Would you expect your monthly pay packet to rise by more than £500 a month ?

Even taking into account extra tax and pension ( usually a third?) it should still be more shouldn't it? Confused

I don't have the payslip yet but it seems wrong?

If it's a brand new job in a new company might you have gone on to an emergency tax code? I think that would mean your whole salary is taxed at higher rate.

AndShesGone · 27/09/2016 07:28

Because last month we could manage fine and this month Dh is having to stay in a hotel at £960 a month for this job.

We thought it would be close enough to manage but the gap between the £500 extra in and the £960 going out is too high.

It's totally unsustainable. And will actually put us into unmanageable debt in six months.

So I'm proper terrified and this wasn't supposed to happen. We were supposed to move a month ago to where the job is.

I appreciate that it's double the national average but our particular circumstance here with not moving makes it totally frightening for us as a family.

I really hope it's an emergency tax code or that we can stop paying into the pension for 6 months. That would actually stop us going into debt while we pay the hotel bill and hopefully move.

Thanks so much for all your help. Flowers

Why is the company not paying for his hotel? Confused

fldsmdfr · 27/09/2016 07:31

Surely there are cheaper places to live than paying almost a grand to stay in a hotel for a month?

AndShesGone · 27/09/2016 07:31

It's just a normal job and we were supposed to have moved there. The company wouldn't pay for it.

You must be able to make savings somewhere, if you're on £62k+DH

00100001 · 27/09/2016 07:32

Then, you find somewhere cheaper, or delay the job start?

00100001 · 27/09/2016 07:33

If you tell is the approximate location of new job, I bet the MN collective could find a significantly cheaper place to stay! Smile

00100001 · 27/09/2016 07:34

How long is he planning on living near work before moving?

AndShesGone · 27/09/2016 07:34

There's nowhere cheaper, £50 a night is incredibly cheap for the centre of the city. If he had to commute in from a cheaper hotel (there isn't one) outside the city it would be the same with the commuting costs.

He already drives in at 4am on a Monday to save the £50 hotel room bill on a Sunday, and after work on a Friday. 4 nights is the very least he can do.

None of this was planned. We were supposed to exchange and compete over the summer before the job. Our buyer is very slow. We may have to even go back on the market Sad

DH earns basic 87k and usually an annual bonus of 30k his net income is 3400, ok so he pays extra into a pension about 700 per calendar month in total and has a company car and private health insurance so pays tax on them as a benefit, but your net income is 200 more than him and his basic gross is 25k a year more than you.

Bloody tax, no wonder people gave so many queries.

spacefrog35 · 27/09/2016 07:36

That's less than £48 a night which is really cheap for a hotel round here!

OP it might be worth approaching the company and asking if they offer relocation loans. I'm guessing you aren't getting relocation paid for as part of the starting package but they may well be willing to loan you the money to cover hotel bills which would take the pressure off significantly.

mydietstartsmonday · 27/09/2016 07:36

15k pay rise I would expect approx £50 take home for every extra £1000. So you should see an increase of approx. £750

fldsmdfr · 27/09/2016 07:38

Not a hotel, a room in a house share or something?

Sounds like a nightmare OP. I hope your DH can get on to HR and find out what's happened and get it sorted.

CatNip2 · 27/09/2016 07:38

Sorry for your situation OP, hope it gets better soon.

Johnmeh · 27/09/2016 07:38

A Monday to Friday flat let would be cheaper than a hotel maybe?

Solasum · 27/09/2016 07:39

Look for air bnb. Or for a room in a shared house. Not ideal, but it isn't for ever.

AndShesGone · 27/09/2016 07:40

It's a student halls he's staying in and he walks a mile to work so he doesn't have to pay for the tube. There really won't be anywhere cheaper.

TronaldDump · 27/09/2016 07:41

OP, we were in your situation a couple of years ago, it's so hard! Can you check gumtree for anyone advertising for lodgers? DH basically lived like a student in someone's spare room for a few months while we sorted our house move but it was very cheap and she was happy to let out Monday-Friday and have some space at the weekends! Might be a more affordable option for you?

AndShesGone · 27/09/2016 07:41

Yes, I thought it would be about £750. Which is close enough to for us to make savings of 200 ish a month to manage this. A 500 gap is too high.

OP please speak to payroll today.

fldsmdfr · 27/09/2016 07:41

How about a mortgage holiday? Your bank may let you go interest only for a fixed period?

Trufflethewuffle · 27/09/2016 07:42

Is he working for a large company with plenty of other employees? My DH was in a similar situation a couple of years ago and he took a room in a shared house at a much lower cost.

The company had several employees or contractors from out of the area and people who wanted a lodger used to advertise on the company's intranet.
