What is the law regarding bank charges for returned DIRECT DEBITS?

a direct debit was bounced and the charge was £30 and then it was represented and bounced again and another £30 charged.

I thought i had cancelled the dd before it was due to be represented, but the bank claim i cancelled it the day after. i did it online but it doesnt give the date, just that it is cancelled.

in my defence, i had been advised by the receiver to not use the account for a bit, until the initial stuff re my bankruptcy had been sorted out. but i've now got the all clear and i am allowed to use it again as it is jsut a cash account.

however, i really dont want to have to hand over £60 (and god knows what daily fees!) for one piddling direct debit! talk about kicking you while you are down.

wht can they do to me?

They can(and will) take it from you, but you are entitled to claim it back.

charges of this nature are usually unlawful.

Check out 'bank action group' - my last attempt at link didn't work but google it!
