How much do you spend annually on family holidays?

Our dd has just started school so we're now having to look at school holidays for any hols and I can't believe the prices. I don't know if I'm being unrealistic in my expectations though and I'd love to hear how much other families with one or two children would normally spend on holidays across a normal year. I'm interested in both abroad and here x

As mentioned, as they get older you end up paying adult prices sometimes from 12 years old. One good thing is that we have often booked 2 rooms for 4 adults which has made the teenage years holidays more pleasant.
Cruises are good value if you fancy that. We have had some good bargains too by sorting out flights and accommodation ourselves especially Long haul. Ring around otherwise and ask if they will beat the cheapest quote, we have saved £££s doing this.
Also had some cheap last minute caravan holidays with Hoseasons- they have discounts even in the summer school holidays.

We are a family of 4. We're going to Croatia in October half term for £1200, which I think is a bargain. We booked cheap flights (Norwegian airlines) and an AirBnB.

Last year, we went to the States for 3 weeks which cost £10,000 (excluding spending money). We don't normally spend that much, it was a one-off!

We often go camping (though have recently moved from tent to caravan), which can be done pretty cheaply, and which we all enjoy.

School holiday prices are major but as pp have said, wait until they're teens. We paid £5k plus spends this year for 4* Cyprus. It gets to the point where your not little ones need a room of their own.
Next year's price, early July is coming in at £4k for 10 days.

Family of 3 here (DS now16). We had a lovely townhouse up in the hills of Southern Spain this year. Went for 10 days and it cost £3,800 plus approx £1,000 spending. We find it cheaper to go self catering now as have to have separate room for DS now if we go to a hotel. Went to Skiathos two years ago for 10 days to a lovely 5* hotel. Cost £5,000 plus £1,000 spending.

We are a family of two.

For a week in Greece or Spain in the school holidays I usually spend about £1,000.

For a long weekend away in this country I usually spend about £500.

This year we went camping for 5 days in a beautiful place and I spent a total of £400, for everything - transport, campsite, entertainment, food etc. It was one of our best holidays, I wish I'd done it sooner.

Next year I'[m saving up for a big long haul holiday and I need to save £2,500.

I've been looking at package deals to Spain/ Greece/ Canary Islands for summer 2017 and the prices are shocking! £800- £1k pp for a week all inclusive ( albeit in a resort including waterpark etc). Am I going wrong somewhere? I'm also loking at Eurocamp type places but not having driven much in Europe and all the problems going off at Calais puts me off.

pinkchampagne1 · 09/09/2016 08:05

It can work out expensive to go away during the school holidays so we look out for the best deals. We often choose the last week of August to pop across the channel for a break as you can get breaks cheaper due to the French/Belgian/Dutch children being back at school. There are no problems driving through Calais so long as you drive in the daytime.

Venue holidays are like Eurocamp but better value so we often book a few a break to Berny Riviere at least once a year. Normally we go either Easter holidays or last week of summer holidays. Loads for children to do and a lovely little man-made beach. It is also a good base for a trip to Disney. This usually costs us around £200 or just over for 4 of us to have a 3 or 4 night break in a static home.

We are just back from Center Parcs in Belgium (De Vossemeren) which was under half the price of the uk price for the same 4 nights. It was amazing - there was so much for children to do, far more free things than Elveden. Also much quieter due to Belgian children being back at school so no queues for slides etc. Drinks and activities were also much cheaper than uk Center Parks. 4 night break at the end of August in a VIP lodge cost us just £399 for a family of 4!

We also had a week in the Alps as my DH's parents have a house out there. Probably spent over £2,000 on travel, lift passes and ski hire.

Week in Sorrento, just the two of us for our anniversary. Bit of a treat and cost around £3,000 for the week.

Tenerife for 10 days all inclusive in Oct half term cost just under £3,000 for 3 of us as DS1 doesn't want to join us. Got this slightly cheaper as DS2's school have development days the week before half term.

OP, I think you're going to get a definitive abswer because everybody's situation is different!
Try looking at it from the point of view of disposble income. How much is left over at the end of the month? If the answer is "nothing", then you can't afford to go on holiday. If there is, then try taking 6 months of that and taking it as your holiday budget. If you go self catering you eat as much as you would at home, so your ordinary spends stay the same, plus days out (100 a trip?) would give a clear idea.

Going all inclusive means your weekly food spends can go into the budget too. Don't forget dog sitters, airport parking etc. Then, when you're clear on what you're spending you can sit back and enjoy the anticipation!

Borrowing money for a holiday is a BAD idea.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/09/2016 08:17

Sorry, I missed out I DON'T think...

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2016 09:40

£800- £1k pp for a week all inclusive in school holidays

I'm not surprised by this at all. We normally pay £400-450 pp for a week B&B in a 3 or 4 star hotel in June or September, in Mallorca, Spain or Canaries, so add in the extra for AI and the fact that it is school holidays, and you can easily see how it costs about double.

Babyroobs · 09/09/2016 12:17

We've paid around £460 pp All inclusive to Ibizia this Oct half term which thought was good but maybe our half term is different to the rest of the country.

Passthecake30 · 09/09/2016 12:23

About £3.5k for 10 days in Spain, includes spending money

lovelyupnorth · 09/09/2016 20:43

Usually 2 weeks self catering in europe via either car or flight about 1200 quid

Done Sweden, France, Belguim and Spain in recent years during school holidays for that. Christmas to the states this year have allowed 3k
