If you saw a sofa in a shop with a price ticket attached - would you expect to buy that sofa for that price?

Because I would & I am trying to decide if I am being awkward?

OP posts:
OneArt · 21/08/2016 15:43

Yes I would.

Pigeonpost · 21/08/2016 15:44

Yes!

Floralnomad · 21/08/2016 15:44

Depends if it comes in different fabrics / leather and with recliners etc as I assume the price would be for the base / basic version .

LockedOutOfMN · 21/08/2016 15:45

I would haggle, I've always haggled on furniture. Usually go for a 10% discount unless there's a reason I think I can get away with more (e.g. buying more than one item) and end up getting anywhere between 5 and 10% off. Good luck!

HeyMacWey · 21/08/2016 15:45

Yes unless there was a sale on across the shop - ie 30% off marked price.

titchy · 21/08/2016 15:45

Yes. Having said that they are not obliged to sell to you, e.g. (as I suspect here) the ticket is obviously priced too low in error.

Katymac · 21/08/2016 15:46

So if a sofa bed was on the shop floor with a label saying "sofa bed" & a price of "£623" would you expect to pay £623 for that sofabed in that style/fabric/colour exectly?

OP posts:
SavoyCabbage · 21/08/2016 15:47

I would expect to pay that, but if it had been incorrectly labelled or wasn't exactly the same then I wouldn't.

titchy · 21/08/2016 15:50

You're being a bit cryptic OP...

The label could be for that specific sofa bed - ie the ex-display model. What does the shop say.

OneArt · 21/08/2016 15:51

Was it incorrectly labelled OP?

Katymac · 21/08/2016 15:51

They decided to display the price of the 2 seater sofa as people would think it odd that a 2 seater sofa was more expensive than the 4 seater sofa next to it

The sofa bed - which that was - is £804

Which I think is misrepresentation

OP posts:
Katymac · 21/08/2016 15:52

So Sofa bed with price of sofa attached to it

OP posts:
LockedOutOfMN · 21/08/2016 15:53

OP, it's confusing but not illegal. All you can do is ask for a discount off of the real price.

Katymac · 21/08/2016 15:56

So it's not misrepresenting?

If Tescos had a £1.50 sticker on a 1kg box of cornflakes but a small note of the back said actually it's only the 500g that is £1.50 this one is £2 they would be done by trades descriptions

they do not have to honour any price label...it is always an invitation to buy

I think it's only once you have forked over the money it becomes a contract, and if then they realise they gave you the £800 sofabed for the price of the two-seater it's too bad for them.

titchy · 21/08/2016 16:01

I dare say trading standards would give them a bollocking. However they still don't have to sell to you at that price.

LockedOutOfMN · 21/08/2016 16:02

As TondelayaDellaVentamiglia says, a price label is not a contractual obligation; it's an invitation to buy. Only when you go to the cash register and offer to buy the product and hand over money, is the contract entered into.

Katymac · 21/08/2016 16:03

Maybe it's advertising standards I want then

Apparently it's their policy to under-price sofa beds so people don't "get confused"

OP posts:
Gizlotsmum · 21/08/2016 16:04

The label clearly states the 2 seater sofa is £623, so ambiguous in the fact that it was on a sofa bed but not sure it's a trade descriptions breach

Katymac · 21/08/2016 16:05

No I checked it is trading standards
In-store advertising

Misleading claims on posters, shelves or till points should be reported to your local trading standards department. The ASA will look into complaints about any leaflets or brochures that can be taken away from a store. We can consider complaints about sales promotions that appear in-store.

But the price label says -sofa bed as displayed £823
It's on that triangle on the top right corner?

YABU

ShatnersBassoon · 21/08/2016 16:06

It's definitely misleading, and a really daft way to merchandise. I'm not sure why they would do it, knowing that anyone interested in buying would be nothing but disappointed to find out the price is wrong.

Katymac · 21/08/2016 16:07

I still reckon it's an intentional con - If I had been sat on a sofa then fair dos - but I was sat on a sofa bed with an incorrect price on it

OP posts:
Emochild · 21/08/2016 16:07

Sorry £804

Katymac · 21/08/2016 16:09

Yes disappointed & walk out

I came back after 7 other shops because it was 'right'; I was prepared to negotiate of 'extras' but not over the basic price

I discounted other sofa because of their higher price (which wasn't actually higher)

I saw one at the same shop which was OK but even that £200 more for the sofabed despite the sofa bed being labelled at the lower price
