Dp and I moved into our flat mid September and our tenancy runs until June 30th.
Dp is a full time student and so exempt from council tax, I am also a student so we assumed exempt. When we moved in we filled in the forms and sent them back and since then heard nothing. Due to another issue with our landlord we were on the phone to council today and discovered that although the initial issue is not from our tenancy we owe over £400 council tax.

Now, they never told us I was not exempt and never sent us a bill. I am a part time student and have a 2 week old Ds and have not worked. I have always been told that due to being a PT student I can't claim any benefits. Council says I am not a student and the only way I can be exempt from the tax is by claiming benefits. Now, on a combined income of around £7,500 student LOAN how on earth do they expect us to pay? And what am I if I'm not a student yet not a non working benefit claiming mum?

I don't know about whether you have to pay or not but if you do have to pay, you will have to pay it.

Can you put a claim in for incomne support?

Indith · 26/01/2007 11:22

I know I can't argue with that, but looking at the website you can get exemption for low income so even without benefits I should be able to be exempt as for anything governmental student loan does not count as income. Clearly the concil hasn't checked their own regulations yet! I don't mind form filling but it helps if they send me forms, or even a bill. Without a bill or any other form of communication how are we supposed to know that we are being expected to pay?

charlie- as far as I know for income support etc I count as a student therefore can't claim it.

It might be worth you contacting your local Citizens' Advice Bureau. They have lots of knowledge about financial matters.

When you say you are a part-time student, what does that mean? If it means that you can do your studies in the evenings and weekends, etc., then you may be able to claim Jobseeker's Allowance - although then you'd have to actively seek work. If you are in receipt of JSA, then you could claim housing benefit and council tax benefit.

No I study in the day. It is a normal full time degree course but at a part time rate.
