Help ...On A DMP plan & car is unfixable , how have other's managed this?

Hello all

We are currently on a DMP plan with Stepchange.

Our car has come back from the mechanic today & is unfixable.

We need a car ( I have a chronic physical illness & am registered disabled ).

How have other people with DMPs managed to obtain new cars ? We have been looking at Red Potato who work with Payplan has anybody got experience of this?

I am really gutted at the thought of having to take car finance as this will obviously add to our debt.

Please no posts suggesting we go without, save for a car , get it fixed etc - if there were any remote possibility of us being able to do these things we would be doing them.

Really stressed & fragile about it so looking for some supportive posts please.

Honestly ? You can't get more credit when you are in breach of your current arrangements. I know it's not what u want to hear

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 20/06/2016 22:44

I think you'd be in breach of your DMP to get more credit now, and you'd get an extortionate rate if you managed to get anything at all - the FCA would be pretty hard on any companies offering finance to people who are on DMPs (and therefore clearly can't pay).

Do you have a guarantor?

I know it's not what you want to hear but you need to be very careful here.

tribpot · 20/06/2016 22:51

You don't qualify for DLA or PIP? Or have you not been assessed yet?

What do you need to use the car for, can you break the problem down into smaller chunks to see if there are individual solutions to elements of it, e.g. school transport, shopping, hospital appointments, etc.

AgentProvocateur · 20/06/2016 22:55

Do you have any kind relative who could buy it for you, to be paid back sometime in the distant future? You're very very unlikely to get any credit to buy a new car.

NoMudNoLotus · 20/06/2016 23:43

Actually Connie it's people like you I don't want to hear from - we have taken advice from Stepchange today Hmm.

Trib I'm not sure how my disability benefit relates to this.

I think trib is maybe thinking along the lines of disability car. I have some relatives who get disability and as they need transport they get a car instead of some of the payments. Works out well for them as if car breaks it's paid to be fixed. Taxed and insured. And new car every 3 years. Would that be an option?
Also as someone suggested in the meantime can we help with breaking things down ... hospital appts, NHS can provide transport for those on benefits who have noway of getting to appointments. Online shopping for groceries. It does leave you a little house bound which can fell sufercating but it's maybe an intermediate step.

I only know 1 family with DMP and they bought cheap run around at 200-300 until they were back on their feet. Good luck, can't be easy

tribpot · 20/06/2016 23:55

Yes, birchy is right. I was wondering if you qualified for Motability.

NoMudNoLotus · 21/06/2016 00:43

Hi trib with wonderful mr Cameron's reform of the benefit system I lost my motability entitlement Sad.

Would your other creditors be happy about you taking out further debt?

Flowers for you.

Stepchange's website says;

"When you enter into a DMP, it’s with the understanding that you won’t take out any more credit products while you’re paying off your existing debts.

If you find yourself dealing with an unexpected expense such as boiler repairs or replacing an appliance, please call us before deciding on how you’ll pay for these things."

I'd give them a call. It might be possible, as it's an emergency - but I'm not sure that anywhere would give you credit, without some form of guarantee. Do you have a deposit? Could you scrap the current car for some funds?

I am really sorry. It's an awful situation - dealing with a broken car or a DMP would be stressful enough on it's own, let alone together! I hope you manage to get something sorted.

IceMaiden73 · 21/06/2016 18:40

What did Stepchange recommend as it sounds like you would be in breach of their rules :( x

Conniedescending · 22/06/2016 12:49

Look ...I've been there and know how shit it is. I do feel for u but reality is you'd be be getting in worse position taking any form of credit. You can't pay your current creditors - fact. They have agreed to lower payments as part of your smp and probably already defaulted u.

How are you going to repay another creditor? What is your other creditors don't like your new arrangement and start whacking up their charges and refusing to continue with your new repayment? I promise you taking more credit will make the whole mess worse but of course you don't want to hear from me as you are still in the wrong frame of mind.

Let us help you with alternative solutions that will resolve not worsen your position.

And fgs don't even xo template a payday loan
