If you have been split with your partner for 6 years and after 3 you find out the joint account you thought was closed hadnt and the bank wont let you close it because it needs both of you and the bank wont get intouch with ex because you dont no where he is. Then after 3 more years they chase you for a debt of 1700 because ex hasnt paid it and it is proved his debt by the bank and now debt collecters are on your case is there any thing at all you can do or do you just have to pay.

Don't know but am in similar situation.
When I split with my ex, I found paper with my faked signature. He said he was going to take a loan out on the joint account.
I tried to close the account, but they wouldn't as there was a loan outstanding on it. I said I had never signed a loan form so take my name off the accoutn -they wouldn't. They kept chasing me for the debt even though it was clearly not my signature, they had his address but never chased him (I know they had his address as he informed them of his changed his address, and it automatically changed it on the joint account and therefore my account - right when my card had gone missing for my solo account and I had ordered a new one ).
I got my solicitor involved as they were saying that I had to prove I didn't sign. I took the view that if they wanted money out of me then they'd have to prove it was me who signed. I asked about CCTV and the fact that the money was transferred staight into his solo account.
My solicitor said there was nothing more he could do unless they took me to the small claims - which they didn't.

All I can say is get a solicitor, and fight and hope they don't take you to court. Good luck.
