OAP's - any specific financial help available ?

My dm may not feel it but has been an OAP for a good few years ! She lives on her own, has a state pension but no benefits. Apart from the Heating payments is she entitled ot any other help. She manages on a day to day basis but occasionally one off costs come up. Thinking particularly of a contribution towards Digital TV aerial upgrade (which I thought had been talked of but can't find anything on the net) and if her boiler needs replacing. Anyone know of any sites I may be able to check this , and other similar help available, out on ? tia

I don't know but think contacting Age Concern might be helpful.

DizzyBint · 15/01/2007 18:02

is she getting council tax benefit? or at least the single person discount? other than that i'm not sure. i would give age concern a call.

TheBlonde · 15/01/2007 18:06

have you checked entitledto.co.uk

free travel may be available, certainly on buses

I don't think the TV thing is happening yet, they'll be doing it once they start the switchover
this

I think the over 75's get a free tv licence now

LIZS · 15/01/2007 18:07

She gets discounted Council Tax for single occupancy, is that the same thing ? If not are there criteria for claiming it ? There isn't Age Concern online in her area yet and she'll kill me if I call them as she doesn't consider herself in need , iyswim !

have a look on moneysavingexpert.com
there is a bit on benefits and a benefit checker thingy.

LIZS · 15/01/2007 18:09

Thanks for that the Blonde - think that is what I mean, but presumably is a few years off. Free travel is available , but she won't use public transport often !

southeastastra · 15/01/2007 18:14

my dad is 76 and my mil is 79 they really aren't entitled to much apart from free tv licence and bus travel and my mil had to buy herself a new boiler. this country treats oaps very badly. my dad has to pay tax on his pension too

LIZS · 15/01/2007 18:16
