how much would you budget for a family of 4 with half board? something decent but nothing too fancy either. during summer (school hols). We have never been on a holiday so I haven't really got a clue.

I'm sure you can find a deal. Just sum to self cater when you're there and don't eat out. Sounds like you need a holiday OP

whensitmyturn · 16/05/2016 20:40

Two years ago we managed to do 10 days in Majorca for the 4 of us last 10 days of August for 1400 all inclusive with flights. 3 star resort was lovely, clean, good food etc left it till 6 weeks before to book though!
We found that prices dropped a little at the end of August as Scottish schools go back then so not quite as busy abroad.

whatamess0815 · 16/05/2016 20:42

just googling family fund. thanks for that tip.

our school does not authorise hols out of term time, no exceptions for SN.

Ive not read the whole thread but its well worth applying to the family fund they can give haven vouchers and thomas cook from memory. Secondly i work for an independant travel agent and i would tell you to look at bulgaria that will be your best best or possibly turkey the trouble is the equivilant of southhampton to scotland away from the main beachy resort. Im sure you could get sc in greece for that sort of budget. Take a look at belleaire sun spot balkan and olympic holidays xxxx

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/05/2016 20:51

Does it have to be to a beach?

There are some really good value chalets in the Alps available in the summer which are SC.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 17/05/2016 10:45

OP one other thing to remember is that you will need to get passports which will set you back £236 for two adult and two childrens first passports.

Branleuse · 17/05/2016 11:38

and try eurocamp. Itll be self catering, but you can go out for meals or they have shops on site

whatamess0815 · 17/05/2016 12:03

rain , crumbs. passports. didnt think of it. and insurance which costs extra £££ for a child with SN. think I will look for deals for next year or so... thanks everyone.

Babyroobs · 17/05/2016 17:24

we went to France on one of the Eurocamps and stayed in a caravan for a week. The campsite was good, nice pool, entertainment etc. It was around £1k I think which included ferry crossing etc. Obvioulsy there was foosd and petrol on top but somehting like this may be more within your budget.

Cassimin · 17/05/2016 20:27

We had a few cheap holidays a few years ago when ours were little.
We flew to Malaga. You can use easyjet or Ryanair. Then you can look for a cheap apartment in one of the resorts along the coast.
Fuengerola, belemedina, torremelinos etc.
we used on the beach, lowcost and sunshine.
You can get the train right along the coast if you want to save on transfers but you can sometimes get cheap ones through the websites.
Spain is really cheap to eat out and if you get an apartment you can have breakfast and lunch there.
You can take your own cereals with you.
One of ours is ADHD ASD we just make sure we have the ipad on the flight and when we go out for meals.
Hope you have a lovely time wherever you go.

cuppateamum · 17/05/2016 22:11

Have a look at teletextholidays.co.uk (sorry don't know how to link from mobile). In August there are 14 nights in Greece, Balaerics, Turkey within your budget, but self catering. Turkey looks to be cheapest and has 14nts HB advertised from about £340pp. They tend to be deals offered by small travel sales companies, you phone them for more info, and they do tend to add on stuff like transfers so your end price is higher than the initial advertised one. BUT we've used it a few times, found some great deals there before, some of our best hols in fact, and it can be good for last minute deals too. Good luck and hope you get away, whether this year or next.

Branleuse · 18/05/2016 09:36

passports are expensive, but worth it

Branleuse · 18/05/2016 10:20

I didnt know insurance was supposed to be higher with disabilities

My holiday insurance comes with my bank account and noone has ever asked about disabilities. I think that would be illegal no?

whatamess0815 · 18/05/2016 13:18

bran, yes, certain disabilities push the premiums up (like other conditions e.g. heart conditions or cancer). I have friends with children with complex physical health needs and they cannot find travel insurance at all.

OP posts:
Cassimin · 18/05/2016 19:18

Our insurance is with the bank. I told them about my partners conditions and my two sons. They said I could pay extra or stay as we are but any emergencies connected with reported conditions. (Asthma, ADHD)
As they have all been fine on their meds I decided to take a chance.
Everything was ok.

lovelyupnorth · 21/05/2016 07:00

It's doable with some thought we did two weeks in a villa cost us £400 for the villa booked through sell and seek on Facebook. Flew from Glasgow end of August for £550 for all 4 of us. Same dates from Manchester where over a grand.

Just need imagination. Also AI is killing the local economies in tourist resorts.

H3adach3 · 30/05/2016 10:00

why not have a holiday in UK first and see how that goes first before going abroad ?

If you go to an island by ferry it feels like you are going further and more of an adventure eg Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Isle of Arran, rent a cottage, self cater or a static caravan

What about Blackpool has beach and lots to do

Farm holiday

---

If you are going to think about abroad
You have to be at airport minimum 2 hours before you fly to check in, so that is alot of waiting around

Secondly, check how far your accomadation is away from the airport. Are the transfers included in your holiday or do you have to pay extra. Do you want to spend 2-3 hours on a bus getting to your destination after a flight. Look for accomodation close to airport

Recommend buying travel insurance the day you book the holiday, incase you need to cancel the holiday

Booking flights mid week and not near any special holidays eg Christmas, Easter, summer, May are always cheaper

Athrawes · 12/03/2017 09:07

Uk holiday would save the passport fees. Family fund looks generous, worth a go.

Babyroobs · 13/03/2017 17:02

We paid around £2300 for a one week all inclusive holiday in Ibiza last October half term. The weather was really good although in Oct can't be guaranteed. This was for 5 of us and I think we got one child place free. Sometimes booking early is best as you can get free kids places. Or if you don't mind a drive some of the Eurocamps in France or Spain are great and much cheaper than a package deal.

Marmitelover55 · 13/03/2017 18:24

Our cheapest holidays were a week in a Brittany Ferries gite in the dordogne followed by a week in a eurocamp park to get the pool experience. Ferry crossings were included with the gite. This was self-catering for 2adults and 2 children and cost about £1800 plus fuel/tolls and food.

I would be worried about going to Turkey at the moment due to the high risk of terrorism although I realise no where is safe and I have had amazing holidays in turkey in the past.

Kr1stina · 13/03/2017 18:37

If You have never been on holiday with your SN child before then I STRONGLY recommend that you try in the Uk first.

Needmoresleep · 14/03/2017 07:14

I was wondering about that. We own a holiday flat in Bournemouth and fill out the summer school holiday weeks with families with young children booking for a week. Long, long sandy Beach, lots to do, and reasonable rail and road links, with the New Forest and the Purbecks not too far away. Even in Air Show week (late August) costs for renting can well below £1000 a week. As long as travel costs are not too high, food costs should be the same as home, and extra spending can be kept down if you, say, picnic on the beach.

blueteapot · 14/03/2017 16:59

Try first choice free kids place finder? We are off to menorca (family of 4) for 1200 end of May, all inclusive, one of the kids was a free place - they had 10 day and 2 week hols too. Term time but our oldest is only in nursery (same as reception in England i think)

If Im honest though I dont think you should borrow for a holiday - booking for next year and slowly paying it off might be a better option. Or saving up to pounce next year when a deal comes along (generally 6-8 weeks before Ive found)
