We had a new leather suite in July. The leather has worn badly in one part. One of the arms is so babdly wrinkled it is starting to crack, and the leather has faded in various places. We have someone from DFS coming out to look at it on thursday. Anyone else had a similar problem. (bearing in mind suite is 6 months old and cost over £2k)

have you been treating it?

my mum gor a new and expensive laether suit (not from dfs) a coiple of years ago

they recommended that she used thsi leather treatment stuff that apparently all leather needs

i think its called leatehr cleanser or something

it cleans it and noursihes / moistruises it so it doesnt crack

she does it about every couple of months i think

Edam · 13/01/2007 13:47

I think you are entitled to reject the sofa and get your money back (or choose a replacement or repair if offered ? it's your choice, not theirs). Clearly a £2k sofa should last longer than six months. Quote the Sale of Goods Act 1979 at them - goods must be fit for the purpose for which they are sold, or any purpose you agree with the seller as described and of reasonable quality unless the seller has pointed out any defects to you. Within the first six months, it's up to the seller to prove that any problems are your fault - you don't have to prove that the problem is theirs IYSWIM.

thank you so much. they were fine about sending someone out

Hi Allie, that sounds terrible .. i'm sure when the DFS sofa inspector comes he will agree you should get a replacement.
When we got our first set of leather sofas from DFS i thought one sofa looked much more wrinkled than the other. Some guy came round had a look but said all was fine .. it's natural. Have to say mine wasn't cracked or faded like yours.
(My grumble was the delivery before Xmas .. they delivered Xmas eve and i was at work! had to get my sister to get to mine pronto!!)

AllieBongo · 13/01/2007 14:15

now there is some wrinkling etc which is fine, but there is one patch in particular that looks like a pensioners scrote

OP posts:
mythumbelinas · 13/01/2007 14:19

lol
oh and if he asks you how do you sit on it etc .. think and answer carefully .. might ask how you sit/lie and generally use the sofa .. after all you've had it 6 months now.
only had mine a couple of weeks and lying on the sofa and sitting on the other made a difference!!

AllieBongo · 13/01/2007 14:23

we sit on them normally, no food or drink, kids are banned i would expect the leather to soften or change, but the arm chair looks like it's from a completely different suite...

OP posts:
mythumbelinas · 13/01/2007 14:26

don't take no for an answer then ..
ive had mine for almost 10 yrs now and it still look the same .. no fading or cracks at all

AllieBongo · 13/01/2007 14:33

thank you it is this one btw same colour

OP posts:
mythumbelinas · 13/01/2007 14:40

no, it's not that one .. i've searched but doubt they would still have the same design.
Ours is dark navy .. black looking.
We have a new set of sofas in the other room now .. from ikea .. lovely brown and fabric this time

AllieBongo · 13/01/2007 14:47

do you think fabric is better. dd is 2 now so may be a better option...

OP posts:
mythumbelinas · 13/01/2007 14:50

dd2 is almost 3 .. we don't let them eat or drink near the new sofa.
we don't mind about the leather one .. if they spill .. can wipe down .. when they're sick, they sleep on the leather one
Just that the back room doesn't really get the sun and it's cooler so a fabric one was more cosy .. i was bit of an impulse buy really

AllieBongo · 13/01/2007 15:00

my leather suite absorbs spillages. i am really fed up with it. I bought leather so we could wipe, fecking thing

mythumbelinas · 13/01/2007 16:30

oh dear .. hope you get a replacement or even a diff sofa if that's what you want! good luck

Madoldcatlady · 28/01/2007 17:43

Wyhat happened in the end Alliebongo? Did they give you a replacement?

I've just sent a stinking letter off to Halo who made our sofa. We've had 6 cushion zips go in less than a year. They've replaced the bust ones so far, but I've had enough now and have asked them to swap it for another model.

A bit cheeky I suppose, just to come out and say, "give me another", when they have been good about exchanging the cushions and repairing the so far. I just think if you buy sofas for £2500 they should last years not bloody months

Very interested to hear how you got on and any techniques to make them come good!

Read this: First of all DSF are the biggest bunch of shits there is. The reason I think this is as follows.

Dp bought a suite from them. After just over 2 years, the structure broke on arm on chiar and seat on sofa.

Dp complained and DFS said it was due to dc's jumping on the sofa, and anyway it was out of gaurantee so there was nothing they could do. **liars.

Dp went to trading standards. and was put in tough with an arbitraition company called Qualitast, who were in effect in pocket of DFS (but we weren't told that at the time) They also suggested an independent person to arbitrate, and dp contacted him.

He had been in industry for years and said basically DFS sofas were crap, and that was why dp's sofa had broken, and all sofas should last for at least 5 years.

DFS tried that 2 years gaurantee crap, but it is a load of , because I teach consumer rights at A Level. , and the company are liable for 7 years. Anyway Dp threatened DFS with small claims after independent arbitrators decision, and they stumped up. They are still a load of shit though. There was another thread about them on here about 2 days ago.

Hold out for money back not shitty dfs replacement. The onus is on them if it is less than 6 months old.

satine · 28/01/2007 18:44

That is absolutely shite and they should def give you your money back. We bought two leather sofas from Habitat 7 years ago. I've never treated them with anything, my two kids use them as climbing frames, jump all over them and hang off the arms, our dog is up on them whenever he thinks I'm not looking and they still look fine. For yours to look bad when it's only 7 months old is, indeed, crapola. Give them HELL.

brimfull · 28/01/2007 19:51

Agree with satine, our leather sofa shows no signs of wearing at all, that's why we bought a leather sofa!
Your sofa is substandard and definately not worth the money you spent on it,demand a refund or atleast a replacement.

AllieBongo · 28/01/2007 20:03

hello all. Apparently the leather we purchased was "analine" and not hard wearing at all. The store manager came to see us last week. We went to the shop today and chose a new suite, they will collect it when they deliver the new one. It was outside 6 months to I would have had to get written evidence that they missold which they would never have done. We lost about £250 on the value of the leather suite, but I actually claimed £400 for a biro mark on it from my insurance company, so really we are quids in. I must admit, the manager was very good, honest and reasonable, seeing as I gave him hell. They have given us a 10 year guarantee so, i am actually happy now Thanks for all your replies

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 28/01/2007 20:42

Have to ask, but why was a sofa covered in material that is not hardwearing? What are you supposed to do, stand and look at it FFS?

If you ask me, they are admitting that in fact the item was not fit for the purpose it was made for, which is covered under the "Sale of Goods Act" 1979. That is bollocks about written evidence, they sold you an item that was unuseable. I reckon if you wanted to you could take them to small claims and win.

However as long as you are happy with outcome.....just don't buy a suite from them again, they are reknowned for selling crap

Madoldcatlady · 28/01/2007 21:03

How nasty did you have to get with them to get that result Alliebongo? Did you actually get Trading Standards involved at all or threaten legal action?

Any tips gratefully recieved!.

Congratulations on your new sofa.

AllieBongo · 28/01/2007 22:19

i went to trading standards who advised that written liability was required outside the 6 month period. There are various different types of leather, and analine is one of the purest forms, so is prone to wrinkle and as it is not painted or patented as they call it, colour can change. It is ideal if you are happy for the lived in look, or if you don;t have kids puking on it! tbh dd wee'd on it the other day and it has come out, but i don;t want the shabby look! I didn;t have to be nasty, I was upset and they really did more than they were obliged to under the sale of goods act.
