DP finishes for xmas tomorrow but he isn't going back. He's got to give a week notice I think so do I write 'I am writing to inform you of my resignation with effect 22nd December' or do I put with effect 29th the date of the weeks notice?

I'd make it crystal clear by saying he is offering his resignation, tendering one week's notice as of 22nd, with his employment terminating on 29th.

Better run the whole letter by you then just in case I haven't done it right!! .....

I am writing to inform you of my resignation from Nightfreight with effect 29th December 2006.

Since becoming employed with Nightfreight in May 2006, I have encountered several issues with the company. Several times I have not been paid the correct pay, whether it is overtime or salaried hours and have been left to chase up wages, at times, until the next pay date. This has left me in arrears with my rent and bills.

I have never received or signed a contract and have been advised that it is a breach of my statutory rights to not have this within 2 months of commencing employment. I have never been given any terms/conditions of employment either.

I have only recently been given uniform and have had to purchase my own work clothes on more than one occasion.

This leaves me no choice but to give my resignation with notice of one week and seek alternative employment.

Yours truly,

Sorry, can I just say like FF that it should read immediate resignation, and therefore taking into account one weeks notice, final day at work will be 29th Dec - or something like that.

I'm sure they'll get what you mean with what you've put but they could misconstrue as you are saying resignation FROM 29th and therefore another week to work from then....

Sorry, just saw this otherwise would have replied sooner.

Thanks I missed that last night so dp has taken it as it was... never mind. He won't be going back anyway, he's been paid today so that's it. They have drivers walking out every day over the same kind of things so they should think themselves lucky he's stayed to help them out as long as he has and then given a letter!!
