Right, I've really screwed up this time and it just feels like the end of the world.

My car has been written off by the insurers after an accident as uneconomical to repair. Value of car is perhaps 1500-1700 pounds.

I haven't had the offer from the insurance company yet, but I'm afraid they won't pay out because I have 3 points on my license that I didn't tell them about.
I know this is totally my fault, but I truly wasn't aware this could invalidate my policy until a friend told me.

I can't afford for them not to pay out for the car. It's not expensive, but it's all I've got. I'm 7 months pregnant, and need it to get to work.

I can't believe I might lose so much money by an oversight.

Just feels like the end of everything.

Will they definately find out about the points? and if so, is there any chance of them paying out?

Just don't meantion it. When I claimed on mine, it was very straightforward. They didn't even ask to see my license.

TrueToForm · 21/12/2006 16:00

don't tell them. they don't generally care about points anyway

chai18 · 21/12/2006 16:00

Fear not. They might knock a few quid off (the amount of premium you should have paid) but they'll still pay you.

Blu · 21/12/2006 16:07

Did you get the points recently?

I have had to claim this week, and they did ask about 'any points and convictions' and I told them I had notified them of my 3 points when I rang them with change of address (which I did), but it didn't seem to have been registered on their computer, and no money was knocked off.

How did the damage to your car happen? Mine was parked on the street and I wasnt in it at the time - I don't know if that makes any difference.

Quootiepie · 21/12/2006 16:09

or say you did tell them, and get very irate at them

BellaBea · 21/12/2006 16:14

I was told by my insurance co that you only tell them when you next renew, not when you get the points, so that if you got the points since your last renewal you should be fine anyway. Otherwise, I agree with the don't mention it advice!

Blu · 21/12/2006 16:19

But don't lie if they ask you!

In all honesty, I had understood that you have to tell them at the next renewal. So tell them yes, you have ppoints and were going to tell them at your next renewal.

Is it an issue? I supose it might be, if for e.g the accident occurred while you were speeding and your points were for speeding?

Start a thread with an explicit title like 'anyone know if points affect your insurance?' so that insurance experts might see it?

Hope they pay out, anyway.

I used to work in insurance & we didn't do anything for 3 points, just loaded premium if they had 4 or more.
I would tell only if asked & if you have had them since a renewal date perhaps say you did call...
shouldn't make any difference to claim handling.

Just to give an update on the outcome of this one, Thankfully the insurance company did pay out, and didn't ask to see my licence. Car was worth quite a bit morew than I expected, too.
