Payday loan taken out fraudulently using my db name - not sure how to proceed

My db received a letter from 247moneybox.com. It was a "default notice" saying that he has failed to repay a loan. He didn't take a loan out - not with them or any other company. So someone has clearly used his details (not sure if this means his whole identity has been stolen?) to obtain this loan.

What should he do and in what order? Phone police? Phone this company (not sure they are reputable/real?)

The letter advises paying up and gives contact info for organisations helping with debts. But it isn't his debt. And the 247 money box website has no section for fraud. And threatens bailiffs.

Has anyone got experience of this/knows where to start?

No experience but he can get hold of his report from Experian online & see what credit searches have been done recently & what has been applied for in his name.

Experian are usually very helpful, he can probably phone them & ask what to do next as well.

It maybe best to report it to the police then he will at last have a crime ref no

Moneysaving expert and the consumer forums have people who can give more advice. CF have template letters to send

DO NOT contact the company by phone do not speak to them at all - ensure everything is in WRITING

Surely he will be ok contacting the company as it's not his debt and it was taken out fraudulently. Advice not to contact debt companies is meant for people who actually have a debt.

I'd do a bit more research online (MSE etc) then contact ACTION FRAUD - Info HERE and ask them what to do. If they don't respond quickly I'd contact the company.

Keep records of everything.

Your DB might want to look up his credit report too to see if the scammer is up to anything else. MONEY SAVING EXPERTS advice on looking up credit reports is HERE

Good luck.
