Anyone doing the 365 day savings challenge?

DH rang earlier to ask if we had a large bottle or very large jar anywhere. Bewildering, until he explained that he'd spotted this savings idea: You put a penny for each day of the year into a jar, so on 1/1 you add a penny, 2/1 you add 2p, 3/1 3p and so on until on Dec 31st you add £3.65.

I can see it getting harder to stick to as the year goes on but if you follow through, by the end of the year your jar will contain £668. Anyone else giving it a go/fancy joining in?

I'm doing a version like a lottery where I pull out a number a day and put that in the box so I won't necessarily be paying a huge amount in December. If I happen to have a bit more than is required on a particular day I'll just put it in and have a not of how much credit I have in case another day I don't have enough change

im doing this, im ahead think im paid up til mid march and also exchanging for notes as i go along

Check your house insurance for cash left lying about.

Last year I checked my internet banking every day and transferred any pennies to a savings account. E.g, if the balance was £100.41p I would put the 41p into savings. I can't remember what it added up to in the end cause I kept spending it but it did add up.

FiveShelties · 23/05/2016 22:01

Did anyone carry on doing this? I am doing it in reverse and amazed at how it has added up.

FattyMcFatFace · 02/06/2016 21:22

I'm doing this, the right way round, but stick whatever I have spare in the jar then cross off corresponding days (amounts) on a calendar that I filled in with each day's amount. Iyswim....

Three of us in our family are doing it, it is paying towards our holiday in September and then towards Christmas.

For those of you doing this you might like to know that Metrobank will take your loose change and convert it without taking off the commission the supermarket coin machines do. And you don't need an account with them to change it either.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 25/11/2016 09:53

we counted ours up last night... we have been pretty lax and did a lot of the smaller ones but we had

£260

which is all bagged to go to the bank and probably about another tenner in loose change which was not enough of anything to make up a whole bag

so we have set that as a start for the next year and are starting over now, to finish in November next year.

We do the "cross off whatever amount you have" method

So, not as fabulous as the promised £665 but a tidy sum that we haven't missed. :o

megletthesecond · 25/11/2016 09:57

Might try this over the next year. I've got a sealed tin money box from poundland that I occasionally put loose change into. Should be more disciplined tbh.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 25/11/2016 10:06

We also have done it a bit ad hoc and managed to save £300. We have given up for this year now, but pleased with what we achieved and haven't missed it. We put it in our DDs bank account for high days and holidays with the kids.

tonymac84 · 25/11/2016 16:09

Just been reminded that we started this but decided to knock it on the head as it becomes too much later on. Better to do a bit of matched betting and put away the profits instead

Redglitter · 25/11/2016 16:16

I knew this wouldn't work for me I couldn't afford the amounts layer on in the year. Instead I did £1 a day. I never noticed it on a daily basia and I now have over £300 towards Christmas Smile

PhewGladThatsOver · 25/11/2016 21:53

I think just chucking your loose change in a jar would work best. Everything else seems too much faff.

FiveShelties · 28/11/2016 12:50

I started off with the 366p and working my way down. I just moved the money from current acct to savings, sometimes rounding it up. Have almost £800 and have been surprised how quickly added up.
