An important security call from MBNA - Dodgy?

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 07/12/2006 09:47

It was a recorded bloody message telling me to press star If its not dodgy then if they want to talk to me that much they can call me in person, and if it is - do they seriously get lots of people pressing the button for a machine??

MBNA is the worst card I have ever had for dodgy phone calls.

I have a feeling that this is a scam - you press the button and end up paying for a VVV high premium rate call

FestiveFrex · 07/12/2006 10:07

I would contact MBNA on a number which you have on your statement and ask if the call came from them. I suspect it is a dodgy call so don't ring any number provided by that call, but use one you know is genuine.

tribpot · 07/12/2006 10:08

I would call MBNA and ask them. I.e. don't press star, just dial their customer services number. They'll be able to see if the security team has been trying to get hold of you, although that message sounds like a scam to me.

Thanks

news story here which is sort of relevant

iota · 07/12/2006 10:19

on the other hand - that link may be an urban legend see here

trixymalixy · 07/12/2006 23:13

Had a similar recorded message from HBOS, but they just asked me to call a number.

I called the number on my statement instead as thought it sounded a bit dodgy.

It was a genuine security call though, but I would neve reply to anything like that. Call the number on your statement.

mbna bunch of fucks - my dh had a loan from rbs they took over for some effin reason. suddenly they are asking for money all over the place - well they can get to fuck

FLAMEinEckItsWiiDay · 08/12/2006 08:30

Can't find a statement ... if its that important then they'll get hold of me. (Is that a bad way to look at it??) I used the card for the first time in about 9 months over the last 2 days.

It could be the long period of inactivity - have you done a lot of spending on it in the last few days?

I hate calls like that.

I think any bank calls/card calls are slightly nuts.

"Can I take you through security please?" No you fing can't - I know who I* am, but considering you were the ones to phone ME, who the hell are you?! Prove it.

Of course, my bank has stopped making those kind of calls to me now (aren't they always trying to sell you something?!) ... I'm probably marked down as a trouble maker

trixymalixy · 08/12/2006 17:59

Flame, that's why they called me. I hadn't used my card for ages and then spent £500 on it.

They might suspend your card if you don't get in touch with them in case it has been used fraudulently.

alison222 · 08/12/2006 18:26

Rubber duck - me too. I have had that sort of conversation with my bank many a time. I just say if its improtant write to me. No letter ever turns up.

FLAMEinEckItsYuleAgain · 09/12/2006 09:27

I'll dig out a bill so I can phone them (need the account number) - spent about £90 on it I think. Thanks everyone
