child benefit

I get child benefit for my 2 sons (16 & 6). It gets paid in separately usually a few days apart. The lower amount has gone in (£54), but I don't see the higher (£80 something) this month.
DS1 turned 16 in March, did his GCSEs this summer and started 6th form last month.
I don't recall being sent anything to complete to inform them he was staying in education, nor anything to tell me payments had stopped.
Since children have to stay in education or training until 18 now anyway, surely there aren't any 16 year old no longer eligible.
Also, if it's stopped then surely I would get a single higher payment for DS2.

Maybe it's just late or do up think I've mucked up?

My ds turned 16 in August and has just started 6 th form the same as your ds. A few months ago I was sent a form asking whether he would be staying on in education and which college/ school he would be attending. I sent this back and my CB has continued as normal, no change. I would give them a ring as it sounds as though perhaps you should have been sent this form in order tocontinue receiving it. Good luck in getting it sorted.

Babyroobs · 17/10/2015 10:49

Just to add, it doesn't automatically continue as some 16 year old will start appreticships for which they get a wage, so in that situation, CB would stop at 16.

We had a form to return in about the May before Ds finished y11 to confirm he would continue in education in the next academic year.

Babyroobs · 17/10/2015 11:05

Yes I'm sure ours was about May time too, certainly was a good few month ago.

Berthatydfil · 17/10/2015 11:06

You should have had a form. But I think you can notify them on the gov.uk website

Am furious!! Found the letter dated March TO MY HUSBAND. We are in middle of divorce so communication not good. The benefit goes into MY account which is my name only so why the fuck are they writing to him. Heads are going to roll on Monday.
Anyway, I will send the form (gaaaa will be it be ok if I've singled it even though addressed to him?).
Will they backdate?

Oh and thank you all for your replies. I forgot my manners in my state of rage.

They normally backdate max. 3 months. It would be unusual to write to the father unless they are specifically told to. Was he a hr tax payer?

tbtc20 · 17/10/2015 13:33

No, neither of is have been higher rate tax payers.
I think (it was a long time ago now!), it was set up in his name, but when DS2 arrived I declared him and changed bank account to my name.

I'm so cross with H for not doing anything with it nor telling me about it. The penny only dropped when Oct money didn't go in.

It seems odd that you have 2 seperate payments going in, usually they would just add the second child onto the same claim.

tbtc20 · 17/10/2015 14:54

baby I never realised that. It's always been 2 payments. They should also have changed the amount to be a single higher (first child) amount, or is it really only for the first born child, rather than a single child?

You do need to tell them, I think that you can do it online at the HMRC page - sorry to be vague, I did it some months ago now. There is info here

SplatterMustard · 29/10/2015 18:43

OP just checked, my CB is £34 for two children, not sure where you got the higher amounts from?

pinkprimroses · 29/10/2015 19:43

If you're getting two separate payments that would suggest that your DSs are each under different parents - ie DS1's CB was in your husband's name, and DS2's under your name. I think that's perfectly possible, even if the bank account it was paid into was in your name - my ex and I deliberately set things up like that (when we were still together) as we were in and out of work and wanted to make sure we both had our NI contributions paid. It would explain why they'd written to your DH, not you, so you might want to get it corrected to being paid to you (assuming you're the main carer for DS1) when you phone them. Your DH may need to contact them to confirm this is OK with him - otherwise you'd need to prove you're the main carer.

GreenGoblin0 · 29/10/2015 21:54

Splattermustard the £34 is the weekly amount for two children. OP must be receiving it 4 weekly hence the higher figures
