JSA/part time working

Hi,

I wondered if you can claim JSA whilst you are unemployed, but only looking for a part time job?

DH is looking to work during school hours. Due to various reasons, DS can't access before or after school care, so DH needs to do morning and afternoon school runs, and be around in school holidays.

So whilst he is looking for a job of these hours, can he claim contributions based JSA?

I think the rule is you have to be looking for full time work. But perhaps he could find hours to fit round by working weekends or similar. But you can't say I can only work 15 hours a week or can't work school holidays. But check it up.

I feared that might be the case. Thanks

Yes, you can be looking for less-than-full-time hours if you have good reason, such as a chronic medical condition or young children for whom childcare is unavailable for a good reason.

He could apply for JSA and discuss with the job coach he is allocated.

Thats interesting, Liney, I'll tell him. There are good reasons DS cant access holiday of after school care. He can go to breakfast club for 30 mins in the morning but that is all.

Good news is, he has an interview next week, so hopefully wont need JSA.

Does your ds have a disability? If so if your dh was his carer he could claim income support rather than JSA.

Carer's Allowance is for 35 hours minimum a week. That includes evenings and night times.

If you ds receives middle or high rate care your dh can claim
Carers allowance that's less than JSA at £62.10 however he won't have to look for work or can just look for part time it's up to your dh.
Just realised it was contributions based JSA and you can't claim contributions based income support.
