counterfeit money

Has anyone around Petersfield had an issue with finding themselves unwittingly in receipt of forged/counterfeit notes this summer, and having the bank confiscate them? I run a small yoga and pilates business and get paid on an individual weekly basis by most of my students. I've been having a problem with forged notes when I go to pay my money in at the bank. Considering the wide spread of my income I do seem to have been very unlucky! Anyone else had the same experience?

Have you mentioned it to the Town Council or the Chamber of Commerce - both of whom would have heard it its a problem

Get a money checking pen!

Thank you for your replies. Chamber of Commerce and Town Council is a good idea. I shall check in the morning. I will admit it was a leading post. I am on a mission and doing some of my own detective work. Next is fb and twitter. Just have to join first of all!

I have a mains UV counterfeit checker. The pens are apparently now unreliable, according to the Bank of England website.

In which case you should also speak to the Police because they may already be watching it and your actions could impact negatively on whatever they are doing in the background.

Yes I have and various other authorities. It's hard to get people to take what I'm suggesting as seriously as they should. There seems to be no great hurry to get back to me or put me on to any one in a position of real authority. Once people hear the full time line of events and why my suspicions are aroused they all agree that there is something very odd, not to say downright dodgy; but then I am redirected to people and places already tackled. It is frustrating, taking up more time than I have to give really and I'm not sure if there will be any kind of satisfactory outcome. And for sure I won't be the only person who has experienced the issue, or who will in the future unless it can be stopped.

If you've had legal advice, presumably you are aware of the relevant laws around money laundering, and tipping off?

I would be very, very careful about how you proceed.

We had a business in Scotland and a long time ago (10yrs at least) got a letter from somewhere (Police/bank? can't remember) warning us there were a large number of fake English £20 around in that area at that time and to check them very carefully. We never knowingly got one -or even got offered one...(we did used to check with a pen)...
(As an aside we also got told in Scotland counterfeit English are most common and in England counterfeit Scottish as people are less used to seeing them so find it harder to spot a fake - but actually I think they get checked more carefully...)
Surprised similar hasn't happened in your area ...suspect the police are working in the background...I wouldn't start a campaign without advice from them first.

EmuYogaandPilates · 29/09/2015 09:18

Messages received and understood. And no I haven't had any real legal advice. But it would be so useful to hear if other people have experienced the same issue as myself. It is going to be hard to find concrete evidence. I do know not to mention specifics and names and places etc....

Have the bad notes been getting past your electronic checker or have you just bought it? Could it be the same person in one of your classes passing the bad notes.

EmuYogaandPilates · 29/09/2015 12:40

That was of course my first assumption. However this issue has been building throughout the summer months and can't now be attributed to my students. I have explored every avenue of possibility. I am forced to the conclusion that the least likely explanation is in fact the only explanation.

VulcanWoman · 29/09/2015 12:55

Are you checking every note with your electronic checker?
Sorry if I've missed something but what is the least likely explanation?

BaronessEllaSaturday · 29/09/2015 13:06

If I'm right in my assumption of what you are suggesting have you tried logging down all the numbers of the notes?

EmuYogaandPilates · 29/09/2015 13:42

no I wish I had now, but as I say it was the least likely explanation so very hard to get your head around. There is an audit trail to a degree. The weight of circumstantial information is pretty heavy. Finding others with the same experience would be hugely helpful. I'm spending a lot of time n the phone trying to get somewhere with the relevant authorities.

It's impossible in the circumstances to be more specific, I'm sorry.

Oh I see. Must be a pain to be checking every note but needs must by the sounds of it, I'm sure everyone will understand if you explain. Hope things get resolved soon.

VulcanWoman · 29/09/2015 15:16

Everyone in your classes I mean.

EmuYogaandPilates · 29/09/2015 18:24

Thank you Vulcan woman. It will have to be resolved one way or another. I hope at some point I will not need to be quite so mysterious.
