I need approx 3k to fund my divorce and financial settlement and being on my own with the dc I really don't want to wipe out what little savings I have .
Ive found a really good solicitor but she wants payment in advance .
Ive applied for an interest free credit card and been declined.

I have a default which is 5 years old and everything else is up to date .
My ex will not move his address on anything and never pays his bills so I think being tied to him with the linked address doesn't help either.

I was looking at a credit union loan - ive filled out the application to join but never saved with them.
Do you think they might lend me the money as the rates seem very reasonable .
I don't want to apply anywhere else as the bank have just made me a mortgage promise if I move and I don't want a heap of searches on my credit file.
I cant ask family either .
I work for the nhs and have a fair salary with no credit commitments .
TIA

Can't help with the Credit Union part, however as far as your Credit File goes, tell all of his creditors that he no longer lives at your address, and file a Notice of Correction with the Credit Reference Agencies, essentially saying that he is your ex, and you have no financial ties to him. (you have a maximum of 200 words). Underwriters will read this.

Also, if you're not intending to keep your married name when you divorce, change it now, to further disassociate yourself from him.

Linked addresses don't exist anymore. If you are married you will be linked to him, though, and so his bad credit will affect yours. A Notice of Correction will help, like biscuit advised.

A Credit Union may lend you the money, they don't usually refuse people unless you have terrible credit, but for most you need to have been saving with them for X amount of time first. Do you meet that requirement? I don't think it's very common for them to lend to you straight off.

Does your Credit Union have a website?

For the one closest to me, you need to set up a DD for saving for at least 6 months. There's another in the next town that requires you to pay into savings for at least 2 years, and a third that just requires a minimum amount in a savings account for over 7 days before applying.

If you're willing to transfer your savings that may well meet requirements. I hope it does :)
