Sure start maternity grant

Hi,

Posted this in multiple births too, but wasn't sure if there might be some benefits experts over here. I've heard that the eligibility rules for the Sure Start maternity grant change with a multiple birth. I'm finding the gov.uk pages a bit woolly in their info. Anybody able to summarise? I've gathered that you may be eligible if you already have a child and a subsequent birth is a multiple, but I can't work out the exact benefit rules. I doubt we'll be eligible as we don't get any benefits and wouldn't really be classed as low income, but I'm curious and maybe somebody reading this might benefit.

Thanks!

Do you mean the £500 grant you get when first baby is born? If so I don't think that exists any more. It was cut.

You have to be in receipt of benefits for it, if you aren't then you don't qualify. If you are expecting twins and are on benefits then you still qualify even if you have a child already, if a singleton and you have children already you aren't eligible.

If you qualify and have twins you will receive 500 rather than 1000 if you already have children.

The idea is you are supposed to reuse a cot buggy etc for subsequent dc. However you can't do that if you have two at once.
If you are entitled to tax credits once twins are born you would receive the grant.
