Why would a hotel need the address of my bank to take a payment?

This is a duplicate of my post in AIBU. I thought I'd post it here in the hope that people experienced in the banking system might be able to cast an eye over it...
My DP is going to an event in January being held in an hotel.
He has been sent the booking form and it asks for on top of personal details like name and address etc...
Name of bank
Address of bank
Name on card
Sort code
Card number
Security number
Expiry date

Maybe because of the whole Jeffrey thing I'm being particularly careful but some of those details seem strange.
AIBU to ask if some of these details requested aren't normal?
I can't remember having to provide the address of my bank when I have booked an hotel stay before.
Also I can't think why they would need the sort code without the account number especially if they are asking for the long card number.

I replied to your other thread, I'd assume they just ask for the bank address as a double check in case the sort code is wrong.

Is it a small hotel? It sounds to me like there are just a bit behind the times, if they are going to use the long card number remotely then they don't even need the bank details anyway, why not just ring and ask them how they are going to process the payment and how they store the details

TheGirlFromIpanema · 22/08/2015 10:44

is the hotel abroad op?

Londonmum14 · 22/08/2015 10:44

Why would they need the sort code though if they are using the long card number?
I can't remember having to provide the sort code for my account when providing the long card number.

The hotel is in the UK.
It's not a chain.

Casl the hotel and ask them

ImperialBlether · 22/08/2015 10:49

That's ridiculous! You are basically giving a completely strange person/company your whole card. Don't do it!

TalkinPeace · 25/08/2015 14:06

They do not need that.

THe card details stand alone without ANY bank details

the Bank details stand alone without any card details

Threaten to go to another hotel and report them under DAta Protection for holding excessive information

Millliii · 25/08/2015 14:08

And I would never give my security number on the back of the card to anyone ever.

wickedwaterwitch · 26/08/2015 12:23

Odd. All they need is your card number.

specialsubject · 26/08/2015 14:50

if you never give out your security number you can never pay 'cardholder not present'.

the sort code identifies the bank branch.

pay by cheque or ask for their bank account details and do a bank transfer.

TalkinPeace · 26/08/2015 16:53

Cheques have the sort code, account number, full name and signature on them

that is why I hate them

BertPuttocks · 26/08/2015 16:58

Banks sometimes use "Which branch did you open your account at?" as a security question if they are querying a purchase made by card. I'd be wary of giving that away to the hotel tbh.

TalkinPeace · 26/08/2015 16:58

A bit useless with my bank that one : First Direct Grin

specialsubject · 26/08/2015 19:32

cheques are secure and have been for decades. Giving out the CVV number and all the other card details on a piece of paper is not.

TalkinPeace · 26/08/2015 19:52

Cheques not written in erasable pen are secure, that is true Smile

sugar21 · 26/08/2015 19:59

I work in an independent hotel and all we need is a card for payment. We ask for the clients address but never their banks as the sort code identifies the branch.
