Possibly fake e-mail from HMRC Re tax refund

There's an e-mail in my inbox titled "Dear (my e-mail), final notice, you are eligible for tax refund of xxx GBP". It's got an attachment as well. I've not opened the e-mail yet.

Do HMRC send emails like that if you're due a tax rebate? Last time I had a tax rebate - about 10 years ago - HMRC sent me a cheque in the post.

I'm feeling suspicious.

Don't open the email or attachment!of course it's a hoax, just delete it and ignore.

No they don't, its a scam. If your due a rebate they post you a cheque.

I ve had quite a few rebates and they have always been cheques in the post never pre warned by email. I not an expert but I would say it's fake.

HMRC don't do anything like that by email. If you're due a refund it'll be by cheque/via snail mail.

But please report it to them so they can keep track.
