My son has just got married and we want to give the couple a wedding present of about £3000.00. They are low earners and rent privately and he said he can't accept the gift as it will affect their benefits. I think they claim working tax credit, housing benefit will council tax benefit.
Is this true? How much savings can you before it affects your benefits?

You can have 6k before you have to declare it this is due to the interest on savings over this counting as extra income.

No it won't . But if for some reason they have to provide bank statements to benefits they may be asked to confirm in writing where the money came from. It's not a problem.

that amount what affect them, we had a slightly higher amount than that given to us before our wedding and it didn't affect out benefits and was never questioned. But if he's that anxious about it could you see what they may put the money towards and pay for that instead?
