HMRC have registered DH for self assessment

DH received a letter today from HMRC saying that they have registered him for self assessment. He is PAYE and earns £80,000 per year with an annual bonus. Does anyone know what we should do next please? I'm guessing this means they want him to complete a self assessment for the tax year ending April 2015? He pays tax PAYE but has bank accounts so perhaps need to pay extra tax on the small amount of interest he earns from his current accounts? We have only lived in the UK for 2 years so not really sure about the tax system works. Thanks for any advice.

I have heard so many stories about these not being filed properly online - do google and check what's meant to happen as apparently what seems to be the final confirmation isn't (I have an accountant who files mine).

Bank interest isn't a problem in my experience - phone them and they'll tell you. You can round it down to the nearest £1, by the way.

You have to declare any donations you make that are gift aided? None of the charities / giving pages I've ever made gift-aided donations have ever warned me about that.

You really have to keep a record of every black bag you take to a charity shop, every person you sponsor, every one-off / regular donation where you tick the gift aid box?

That's me never giving anything to charity again.

If you are a higher rate tax payer it is in your interest to do so as you get a tax reduction (gift aid is only claimed by the charity at basic rate)

It's not obligatory!

Phew, Yonic, that's a relief! I'm not a higher rate taxpayer (I wish!) so I can stop with the panicking. Ta.

Higher rate taxpayers also owe more tax than has already been deducted on their interest
and more tax on dividends
and lose child benefit

you can do it yourself, but a good accountant will spot the things you forget - like the charitable donations and pension payments and the like
