How hard is it to get a mortgage?

We are thinking of moving house but can't get an appointment with a mortgage advisor for a couple of weeks.
We last moved in 2007 when it was quite easy to get a mortgage.
Based on a recent valuation we have about 23k in the house. We would need a mortg for about 143,000. Our credit rating isn't brillaint though.
Is it still difficult to get a mortgage?

It depends on so many variables. How bad your credit rating is, what you earn and what your outgoings are.

I think this is how long is a piece of string. I know a couple of younger people who have recently got mortgages but they were first time buyers. Didn't seem to be very difficult. So I suppose it depends on your outgoings, any debts and your salaries and of course your credit rating. I think they do seem to ask more questions these days. And will depend on the value of the house you're buying against the amount of mortgage you need and the deposit you will put down.

we are trying to remortgage at the moment & having a nightmare. We've dropped down to one income (which makes a load of difference), but we are struggling to get 165K when we have 145k equity and DH is on 40k+

I think most people will get a mortgage but if you have a bad credit history the rates & term you get mayn't be great

Your broker will find you a deal. As long as you can afford it and don't have defaults on your credit file, you'll be fine.

I have a default so I'm fucked Grin
