Can dh get a 0% credit card deal to pay off some of my balances?

I have some balances on credit cards that I want to get onto 0% deals but I've just been turned down for one (Virgin) and rather than trawl through applying for more we're wondering about dh applying for some 0% deals and transferring some balances from my cards to his, is this do able? Or is it impossible because no-one gives 0% on cash and because the cards are in my name and we don't share a surname (we are married though)? He has no credit cards and no debt at all atm.

I've checked my credit file, it's absolutely fine so I have no idea why I was turned down - it's possible that it's because we've moved and there's no electoral roll info for new address, who knows. Any advice welcomed. We are currently paying stupid amounts of interest a month and I've been meaning to get around to this for ages. TIA.

Get him to get a 0% CC with a cheque book (0% cheques)... then he can. I think he can anyway with just a transfer.

Twiglett · 11/11/2006 14:37

yes its doable .. . don't forget these 0% credit cards charge a transfer fee normally 2% and sometimes capped to £50

Twiglett · 11/11/2006 14:38

but if neither of you are one electoral roll you may have an issue

and you don't want to see loads of credit applications in the same month .. because that will make you seem a bad risk

so play it carefully

WideWebWitch · 11/11/2006 14:46

Thanks both. Qootie, I will look at those, I've just applied for another in my name so we'll see. You're right Twiglett, altohugh I have sent off the electorla roll form for here so I guess it also depends on how quickly it gets updated.
Our house (rented) is a new build and isn't on some databases as existing, so that may be causing the problem too. Hmm, very annoying.

yes, you definitely can. just make sure you get one that is 0% on balance transfers, not just new purchases.
dh has done this forme in the past and we have different surnames.
it may be worth ringing them to do it though, that way you can give a previous address to confirm who you are

TwoToTango · 11/11/2006 15:18

The Post Office were doing one thats 0% for 9 months with no balance transfer fee.

But if he has no credit cards and no debt his credit rating will be very low, www - even if he was given a 0% card the limit might be only 3 figures to begin with.

Get on the electoral roll, wait a couple of months and try again. Or you can pay £2 and get your rating details from Experian and the other one and see if that tells why you were turned down, will get link in a tick.

Experian

Equifax (link to £2 report in bottom RH corner)

Piffle · 11/11/2006 16:41

Dp changed his existing cc over to 0% balance and plopped the leftovers I was paying off onto it as well, no questions asked.
But he had a decent balance to transfer as well as decent credit report

WideWebWitch · 12/11/2006 09:38

Thanks everyone. I suspect my credit rating is suffering from

moved twice within last 3 years
been in my job less than 2 years
The odd (really very occasional) late payment, all more than 2/3 years ago on 2 of my cards
not on electoral roll
no record of our house because it's a new build
the profile of the last area we lived in wasn't great, new area is but they can't verify us here

Dh's might be better although agree that because he has no cards it may not be. We can but try. Janh, I went to a credit site and have my Equifax and Callcredit reports but Experian can't process a report until they verify my address, so maybe that's causing it too. And will affect dh also. Bum.
