carphone warehouse messed up

apologies in advance if this is a little tedious.

when i got my orange contract with carphone warehouse in february i got a half-price line rental deal. you have to send your bills & they send you cheques. i sent my most recent bill & they sent me a cheque for £60. then they sent another one the following week. result!

anyway, i stuck them both in the bank last week. my account has been credited with £120. i got a letter from them this morning saying they'd messed up & the 2nd cheque wouldn't be honoured.

so, they can't take the extra £60 out of my bank account can they? should i theoretically write them a cheque? dp reckons it's not worth the effort on their part to chase it up....

They will chase it up, and then your bank will charge you for the bounced cheque.

Did you know it was a duplicate cheque ?

hoxtonchick · 08/11/2006 20:11

that's a bit mean of them to charge me. it was them who messed up. i banked it before i got the letter saying it was a duplicate. it had a different number i think.

I would have expected them to stop the cheque, but seeing as your bank has already been credited with the full amount, I don't see how they can.
Surely any charges will be made to Carphone Warehouse.

SherlockLGJ · 08/11/2006 20:13

But did you not know how much they were due to send you ?

hoxtonchick · 08/11/2006 20:18

you get £180 over the year, i'd already got £60 a few months ago, so this does in fact make up the whole amount. but i think the final £60 wasn't meant to come until the end of the year. hmmmmm.

yes, kid, i agree with you!

BUT they do have my bank account details, as my bills are paid by direct debit.

Have you contacted them to see what they intend to do?

hoxtonchick · 08/11/2006 20:20

i rang them this evening. the bloke at the call centre wasn't terribly helpful...

Since it has been paid in, I'm 99% sure they can't stop it now...
Thus since they are not being helpful, may I suggest you write back to them ?
The following text might be useful
