What happens if you pay a cheque into the post office, and it disappears?

That's it really.
I paid dps wages in, waited 6 working days, no money.

I've lost the receipt for the po, so they can't do anything.
The bank want to know if the money has been cleared from his employers account before they can do anything.
His employers are apparently not concerned, and told him he will have to wait til Thursday for the admin lady to come off her holiday to check/reissue the cheque.

Have we just lost a weeks wages, or will it be sorted?

surely the employer will have a record of the cheque number ? That should tell them whether the cheque has been cashed or not.

Jelley · 07/11/2006 14:04

I hope so...but no one can tell us until Thursday.

If cheque's not been cashed they can cancel it and reissue another one.
If it HAS been cashed, they should be able to tell where and when AND get the cheque back to see if it's been altered fraudulently

This Thursday, or next week? Not that it helps, but one is a bit better than the other.
Do they not have anyone covering her hols then?

JunkInMyTrunk · 07/11/2006 14:06

Don't pay it into post office.... they're all closing and not many of the staff care anymore as they think they'll close soon.

dh is post office manager and spends all day clearing up mistakess from staff who don't care about job or customers anymore.

But I'll ask him tonight if there's anything you can do[ssmile]

This thursday.

I either have to pay it in to the post office, or post it to the bank (and I trust that even less.)I don't think I can get to our bank on public transport, and be back in time for school run every week.

I'm going to have to open a new account I think.

Thanks for the quick responses. It sounds like we will get the money some time.

Unusual to be paid by cheque in this day and age. Suppose you've already asked job if they'd consider paying by BACS/ internet bank transfer?

Jelley · 07/11/2006 14:32

Not unusual. He's self employed as a builder. Lots of firms pay by cheque, particularly subcontractors.

Oh, slightly different then. I guess the firm has to be sure the cheque isn't just "stuck" in the clearing system. If it hasn't cleared within 5 working days of you lodging it then you can assume it won't be cleared and ask them to cancel and re-issue the cheque.

You certainly haven't lost the money, even if you don't have the receipt. If it hasn't left their account then they'll reissue. If it has left their account then their bank can tell you where it was lodged to. It's possible the PO lodged to another acct by mistake I suppose.

It cleared
After 10 working days
