Student Loans after 25 Years

Hello,

Is is correct that pre 1998 loans are cleared after 25 years as I can't seem to find anything that suggests this, only when you reach 65.

Thank you.

From MoneySavingExpert and from Martin himself

"Loans pre-1998 that haven't ever been in arrears are wiped clean 25 years after your repayments started (even if payments have previously been defferred), if you reach the age of 50 (60 if you were over 40 when you started the loan), if you become permenantly unfit to work or if you die."

But I don't know when they became payable. Is it a year after you graduate? I am close but not quite at 25 years and I am hoping to never have to pay them. I never have yet...

Have you ever made payments Narcheska?

I've never made any repayments on mine. It's about 6 years old now.

I studied in 2005 - 2008, will mine clear after 25 years? I have paid about £400.00 back, in 2012 when I was a F/T teaching assistant.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

No, I never had a graduate job. First loan was when I was 18 in 1992, then 93 and 94. I have always been way under the earning threshold.

I graduated in 1995 so I think it became payable in April 1996 so it would be 25 years from then.

I would've got away with paying the fucker back if I'd have remained part time. Bastards. Graduated in the 90s. So close to getting away with it...

Same here, loans for 3 years to '95. Total around £4,000.

Think it is 25 years but don't know where I got that from.

Never earned enough to pay if back.

Going to increase hours soon though and will be over threshold of £24,000.

Was hoping to not have to pay it back but guess I will have to Grin

It's only 25 years if you start paying back. If you had graduated at age 21 and started paying back immediately, any debt still owed at age 46 is wiped out.

I believe if you never pay back the debt is forgiven at age 50 or 60 anyway though so there's not much difference.
