Your weekly grocery bill... how much?

Okay I'm always trying to economise at the grocery store. But, the best I seem to be able to do is around £150 per week. We have three adults and two kids (18 months and 3 1/2 yrs) in the house. I shop at Tesco, and I don't buy overpriced kiddies foods (like disney yogurts or Thomas pasta, etc.) I don't buy already prepared food (unless it is for me to take to work for lunch because it is cheaper than buying lunch at work).

If you live in greater London, how much do you spend on groceries? Am I going wrong somewhere?

About £70 on 'big shop' then £20 on bits through week.

NatalieJane · 07/11/2006 15:51

We spend about £100 a week plus maybe £10-£20 on 'top up' shops, this is including all food, household cleaning things, things like magazines and lightbulbs, and the biggest sinner - alcohol.

We are a family of three at the moment.

I spend about £70 a week for a family of 4. Thats packed lunches for us all every day and home cooked meals every day... I menu plan which really helps and I bake my own bread rolls, cook scones, flapjacks etc...
Son has food allergies so about £8 of that is his soya milk and apro puddings

£150.... that is a bloody lot though..

doggiesayswoof · 07/11/2006 16:17

About £70 plus £20 on things I forget in the big shop. Also £10 per week on fruit'n'veg box.

Family of 3.

Bloody hell that's £100pw! Must try menu planning to cut it down.

cece · 07/11/2006 16:18

About £60 if I budget and odn't have expensive extras like jar of coffe or shampoo.

Up to £95 if I have more expensive items to buy that week or if I don't plan my menus for the week.

2 adults and 2 children

Would be horrified to spend more than £`100 per week on groceries

pammo · 07/11/2006 16:19

Average of £50 per week, slightly more in weeks leading up to Christmas and if hosting a dinner party but on average £50 for 2 adults and 1 toddler. One weekly big shop at anywhere but Waitrose (£30 - 40) and (£10 - 20) for minor forgotten bits and pieces at Waitrose which is my nearest supermarket but which I find more expensive than Marks & Spencers but not as nice! And for those who may want to know, yes, it's well worth the petrol cost of driving a few miles away to Asda if it cuts your grocery bill by half every week!

SpaceCadet · 07/11/2006 17:55

about 80 quid is my average shop thats for 5 people.

MsUnderstood · 07/11/2006 17:58

£200 ish without wine for 4 of us, including packed lunches for 3 of us. We are in the SE. So I will read this thread with interest.

MsUnderstood · 07/11/2006 17:59

Managed to spend £180 in Tesco this Sunday but £30 of that was a new vacuum cleaner but I know we will run out of fruit and have to get more by Friday.

tallulah · 07/11/2006 18:48

I try not to go every week, but then end up doing several runs for 'bits' at £30 a time. I would say that our average spend has gone up to about £80 for 2 adults and 2 teenage boys (15 & 17) plus 4 cats. That includes washing powder, toilet rolls etc.

noddyholder · 07/11/2006 18:57

Went to asda this pm and only spent £38 Mostly veggie but bought organic chicken and sausages Lots of fruit cat food washing powder etc I hate asda tbh but had to go on my own so easiest.I buy any wine from threshers as I go and buy bread from the locakl bakery.I can't believe how much some of you spend! Can I just ask not wishing to sound rude but do you have a lot of waste?

Mercy · 07/11/2006 19:01

I've noticed that food prices have increased over the last year, but particularly in the last 3 months or so. A 250g pack of steak mince is now approx 20p more than it was a year ago.

Auntyquated, it might be easier if you posted your shopping list rather than the other way round (if you're brave enough, that is )
