Hello..im trying to save up for my kids future, so this is my budget monthly from now on. Il have all bills etc coming out of my bank, but on the 1st of each month il take 100 cash out and this will be for food, petrol, toddlet groups ect. I have 2 kids, i can do a full shop at aldi for 20..this woukd last us for almost 2 weeks. I rarely use the car so 20 should do me for the month maybe more in petrol. Any other tips or ideas or am i mad??!

I only see my partner at weekends, my kids are at there dads a couple weekends a month so that saves me on food. Im by no means neglecting ther well being, and if i ever thought i was i would stop. I dont work, i chose to stay at home and look after my children until they were at school, when then i will be doing my TA apprenticeship. Thats fine, il post a typical weekly meal plan with a shopping list. I must add i already have a cupboard of good staple food, rice, pasta, tinned toms ect..and this is only temporary.

I think the thing to remember is that a person can be fat and malnourished I'm not saying you are fat, I mean that not being hungry or underweight doesn't mean a person is eating properly.

I will be intersting to see what you're eating. We typically spend £10 a day on food.

noisytoys · 01/05/2015 19:09

Is that 6 chicken breasts last 3 meals each? Like a quarter of a breast each per meal? I'm wondering how that's possible. That's the smallest portion ever.

Fairylea · 01/05/2015 19:13

Unless you bulk out every meal with lentils (!) I don't see how any of you are getting enough protein. Splitting 6 chicken breasts for 3 meals for all of you is very meagre.

My 2 year old eats a whole banana to himself and still wants more....! He'd look at me like I'd gone mad if I only gave him half.

WipsGlitter · 01/05/2015 19:13

One breast for an adult, half each for children. That's not unreasonable.

WipsGlitter · 01/05/2015 19:16

I think people in general have lost sight of what constitutes a portion. Constant snacking isn't necessary either.

3luckystars · 01/05/2015 19:16

What about nappies, washing powder etc, this thread is a load of bull.

titchy · 01/05/2015 19:23

Ah so you have a store cupboard full of staples.

So you don't actually survive on £10 a week for food at all.

When your store cupboard staples have run out you'll be spending a lot more.

Why did you post exactly?

happybubblebrain · 01/05/2015 19:25

I agree with the OP that you can spend very little on food and still be healthy. Most people would be healthier if they cut their food bill down a bit. And everyone would be better off if they stopped wasting so much. In most countries people spend much less than that on food.

Methe · 01/05/2015 19:29

Which countries happy and what do they eat?

3luckystars · 01/05/2015 19:30

I agree with titchy.

titchy · 01/05/2015 19:33

I do agree people waste a lot. Half a chicken breast provides one adult their daily protein intake so it doesn't make sense to use more than that if you're on a budget given that meat is expensive.

This is bollocks. I think I would struggle to feed even just myself on £100 per month., or certainly not in a healthy way. Isn't it only just over £3 per day, for breakfast and evening meal with perhaps a snack at lunchtime.

Totally unrealistic. You couldn't feed a family on that. What about other household items such as cleaning products and laundry powder? Those would certainly take you over. The supermarket budget isn't just for food.

swingsandroundabouts2 · 01/05/2015 19:47

Yep, once all my staples have gone, the weekly budget maybe more, and when that time comes il simply re budget! Its not hard! The bananas i give them are large, so half each is fine, if they want more i give them another half but never more than 1 banana a day each....too much potassium. They also eat oranges and aapples too. And sorry, im not sure what goady means...??

OP posts:
Methe · 01/05/2015 19:55

Too much potassium?

I'm wondering if your restricted diet is through choice rather than necessity.

Do you get anxious about food?

swingsandroundabouts2 · 01/05/2015 19:58

No not anxious at all. Yep, shouldnt have more than two bananas a day really.

purplemurple1 · 01/05/2015 20:34

How long term do you plan to stick with it?

Have you budgeted elsewhere for emergencies (car or white goods breakdowns etc), holidays, clothes and shoes for kids, car maintenance, any bill you pay yearly like insurance etc?

ragged · 01/05/2015 20:46

How much for the future are you saving for the kids?

swingsandroundabouts2 · 01/05/2015 20:48

Just taking it each month at a time...and yes, i have enough for all that. I have thought about this

OP posts:
purplemurple1 · 01/05/2015 21:04

So what are you actually asking?

You dont tell us your budget but want advice on what you have missed out.

Is it realistic? We can live on tuppemce a month when the frezers are full of meat, the wood store is full and weve had a good fruit and veg harvest. But that isnt long term as bullets, tree seedlings and seeds cost money.

LadyDeadpool · 01/05/2015 21:11

Still waiting to see that shopping list and meal plan OP Smile

swingsandroundabouts2 · 01/05/2015 21:21

Should have known better than to post on snobsnet..sorry.

SurlyCue · 01/05/2015 21:25

Hmm then why did you if that what you think of the place? Almost as if you were trying to get a certain reaction so you could use that line...
