Two weeks ago, the day before I went on holiday with my daughter, I went to a Barclays branch to withdraw £606. I asked them to pay £206 into my father's account and I gave the cashier the account number to pay it into as he is also with Barclays. I then took £400 cash, which of course I spent on holiday, as well as a fair bit more.
On checking his statements two weeks later, my father noticed a debit of £606 from his account, followed by a deposit of £206 on the same day. The cashier has taken the money out of his account.
Not realising what had happened (why would he?) he called the bank, angry that £606 had been taken out of it without his knowledge and has demanded it be repaid.
I know this should mean I have £606 more in my account then expected, but I don't. I overspent on holiday and on checking my balance on my return, I had about £400 more in my account then expected (When obviously it should have been £200 less then it was, which was obviously wishful thinking).
No alarm bells rang or anything, I just went about my business. I had expected us to be living on a shoe string for a few weeks, but pleased with my healthy looking balance i bought DD shoes etc.
It was only when my dad was ranting to me about it, a lightbulb went off, and we put the pieces together and realised how it must have happened.
My questions are:
Will he get the money back off the bank?
I know I will have to pay this money back, but are they allowed to take it out of my account without informing me about it?
As I mentioned, I haven't managed money well over the last few weeks, I wouldn't have spent so much on my return if this hadn't have happened, will I be allowed to pay it back to the bank in instalments?
Will the bank take responsibility or will they make us sort it out amongst ourselves?
My dad is keen to get it off the bank as he knows I cannot now pay the amount in full and he will have to wait. He also sees it as a principle thing.
Does anybody have any knowledge about this?
