I wasnt intending to but when online applying for loan, which was rejected, the advisor said Yes of course.
Now I have an old credit card that I havent used in a long time. Would it be a good idea to reactivate it and buy a second hand car?

bikerun and seriously I know these factors but my statement was in response to 'what if someone bashes into you the day you buy it?'
therefore my response of having insurance was valid in said situation. Especially in the event of It being none fault.
and just queried that surely everyone who ever buys a car should be thinking about that - not just if a car was bought on a credit card.

Baby even if a car is written off the very day you buy it insurance is unlikely to cover the cost on the credit card. Depreciation as you leave the forecourt...

OP please don't spend £££- the market for old cars is very good, ie cheap. Having always had 1 car for the family we recently bought a second car for this very reason for

chocolatelife · 24/04/2015 19:17

thanks
i was initially thinking 1,500,
but perhaps i should go with the 500 mark.

thing is seriously, you say recently, how recently?
ie. how long do you expect it to last?

We bought it just before Christmas. Classic 1 lady owner, complete log book and the we buy any car price was £400. We'd been looking at similarly aged cars online and in local small adds and they were all around that price.
It's definitely worth going for a very solid reliable make buying so old- our main newish car is a Renault and is very costly to service. Failing family and friends do you have a trustworthy local garage? Not retail but mechanics, they often know about good old cars available.

chocolatelife · 24/04/2015 21:13

yes, we might try that, asking local garage to look over a prospective old car.
thanks

I bought a £500 ebay throwaway. Lasted three years and was still running perfectly, only had to scrap because welding was getting pricey and tyres were coming to end.

check out Honest John for ideas.

We spent £900 on our 10 year old renault megane through a local secondhand dealer. Had it coming up to 4 years now and no issues whatsoever. Passed all mot's first time. It's been a great car.

My car before that was a £550 fiat from a local private sale and that was fab too. Went all the way from norfolk to London and back in it loads of times over a 3 year period.

If you are broke there is no way I'd consider paying more than £500 for a car. You really can get some decent run arounds.

Hello Chocolate

Automatics are easy to drive, you dont use the clutch !
15 minutes of practise learning & you will be fine

You get your husbands old car for free, he buys himself a new or second hand car, so he sorts out the finances.
or sell his automatic & buy a manual car for you
Husband still buys his own car

Your children who seem to be old enough to work - can & should walk, cycle, moped, car or bus - stop providing them with lifts !
You are not their personal taxi service
Independence for you & them !

Good luck

Hello

Agree you can buy cheap 10 year+ old cars, that are good run arounds £500-£1000

But you need someone who knows about cars to look at the car before purchase

Old cars also have less computers that go wrong !

Check out your locally owned garage to see if they have a run around they can sell you that has been serviced & repaired

You buy it, you tax it (no tax disc)

Good luck
