Maternity pay questions and calculation

Hi.
My partner is not getting sufficient information from her employer about the amounts of money she should expect whilst off on maternity. This is making it hard to budget.
We are confused about Income Tax and NICs - if they are applied and how much.

Baby due August 18.
Salary £38,049.96.

Package:

  • 12 weeks full pay
  • 27 weeks Statutory Maternity Pay

Should we assume the 12 weeks is all taxed and processed just as a standard payslip would be, with Income Tax and NICs deducted? Or will it be different because, in effect, she is not working?

For SMP, which is £139.58pw in 2015/16, is this the amount you see in your bank or is this taxed? If so, how? Does that depend on whether she has broken through the tax allowance since April?

  1. What happens to Student Loan contributions during maternity leave?
Should/can this be paused or reduced during this period?

Thank-you.

  1. Yes she will still pay tax and ni
  1. Yes still pays tax and ni - I earn less than her and I had to
  1. She still has to pay student loan contributions but after she has had 3 months of being paid under the threshold (so 3 months smp) she can apply to defer the repayments
