I hope I'm posting in the right section..
Today I have checked my bank and my tax credits have been underpaid by £55.
I have called them to ask why and they say there is an over payment of nearly £5000!

My partner lost his job 2 months into a previous tax year, I called them to let them know ASAP and we made a new claim.

I have always been honest and open with hmrc, providing my p60 and other things they have asked for.

I haven't received any letters to tell me I owe this money or that they are taking money from my tax credits. I could take an extra shift at work to cover money lost but then I would lose even more tax credits wouldn't i?

£220 is an awful lot of money a month to be down. I don't know how I'm going to cope Sad

When you rang them, did they not explain how the overpayment came about?

Mypubesarestraight · 17/04/2015 12:35

She said I had been overpaid in 2013 by £5000. Which is impossible.
I gave them the correct figures and information which they had asked for.
My payments in that year were the same as this, the previous year my partner lost his job and our payments were small because it was based on his previous years earnings.

I have no clue how this has happened? Now I have to wait until the end of May to see if I can pay it back in smaller amounts.

I'm so worried I could cry.

This has happened to me also apprently we owe 4500. They said they are taking 7 pound a week though to recover it. I think you need to phone them up and say you can not cope on the 55 a week and can they take less per month - they SHOULD say yes x

Mypubesarestraight · 17/04/2015 13:58

I have called and said I can't afford £55 per week. The lady I spoke to said they will decide by the 29th of May if it's ok to make smaller payments.

Think the cut off for WTC is below £17,000 so if you will be earning more than this then no you won't get any WTC?

Mypubesarestraight · 22/04/2015 17:41

I get paid £10000 per annum and I get about £10000 wt/ct.

I the post meant the salary was £17,000?? I've received £20 per week less credits for the last two weeks then the usual amount I receive went in yesterday...I always check details are correct hours worked/childcare costs etc but have no idea where the random numbers come from. Will await the paperwork!!

Babyroobs · 22/04/2015 19:46

£10000 in tax credits !!

Reginafalangie · 22/04/2015 20:00

You can appeal the decision. You need to ring them and ask for an appeal form. I did this when they said they had over paid me by £5000. They had "forgotten" to include my partner even though he details were on the form and had been for the previous 2 years Hmm. I was able to prove it was their error and not mine, I still had to pay it back but at a manageable amount.
