Mortgage Protection Cover

I feel like a real ignoramus for having to ask this question, but anything to do with finance isn't my strong point Blush.

When we moved to our current home, DW and I took out a new mortgage in both our names. We concurrently took out mortgage protection cover. This is 14 years and 5 months ago.

At the time we just had our first DC and I'd just changed jobs. Now I'm still with the same public sector organisation, have good sickness benefits (6 months on full pay) should they be required etc... DW gave up work about a year after we'd taken out the mortgage to become a SAHM and has only in the past year gone back to work.

I think we've been paying double the amount we should have been all this time - (some £100 per month on a mortgage of £720) as DW wouldn't have been able to get any benefits as she wasn't working (and yet she's been named on the cover all this time).

So, my question is is this likely and would we be able to get her payments back?

Ring the insurer and ask them the question. In theory you should probably have notified them at the time but see what they say. Does your policy have a six month deferral period to take account of your sickness benefits too? That would shave a bit more off the premium too so check.
