Hi all,
I am in a bit of a pickle. I have worked for the nhs for a long time and am currently a band 4. I recently applied and got a job that is a pay band lower (band 3), the role which I applied for is in a very different part of the NHS.
Due to my experience I was expecting to be put at the top of the band 3 pay scale as although it is a very different role my clinical experience is very beneficial to the new role.
This was not the case and I have been offered pay three points from the top of the band. I had accepted this (although not in writing) but today my conditional offer has come in and the figure is not correct (although this is not the problem)
Contained in the conditional offer was a bullet point stating that if I already worked for the NHS I needed to provide a current payslip in order for my current salary to be matched!!!!
I have already queried my pay with them as I was told at interview that I would get the top of the band 3, for them then to tell me that the lady who interviewed me was incorrect.
I just don't know what to do. Does anyone have any experience of NHS matching pay when dropping a band?
I am sorry this is long I just wanted to get all the facts down.

It's probably in the agenda for change document, but I found a policy that says:

" at a higher band (i.e. promotion): the starting salary will be the minimum of the new pay band or, if this does not result in a pay increase, the first pay point that would deliver an increase to pay (by reference to any recruitment and retention premium, if applicable) ? at a lower band: the starting salary would be the point the individual would have reached had time served in jobs at the same or a higher band been served in the new, lower band job, e.g. an individual who has previously worked in a relevant role at a higher pay band, e.g. Band 6, could be appointed 4 incremental pay points if appointed to a relevant Band 5 role. Please see section 6.1.5 (appointments above the second gateway)" <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=UkYcVbuYBIP4UMuPgsAJ&url=www.rcht.nhs.uk/documentslibrary/royalcornwallhospitalstrust/humanresources/startingsalariespolicy.pdf&ved=0CDQQFjAI&usg=AFQjCNHyjBXM1T8JELW4fkKRmP1zjRETzQ&sig2=hn819vyfDDBIqIKwx8FGkQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here

Are you at the top of band 4? Or just near the bottom - normally the pay scales cross over (so the top 2 or 3 of one band is the bottom 2 or 3 of the next band up? If you're near the bottom of band 4, they'll maybe salary match you to the same point near the top of band 3?

I've known band 6 nurses who apply for a band 5 post in a different area be salary matched to the top, or near the top of band 5 pay. They can't pay above the top of a band 5 post, but they can salary match the lower points of band 6 iyswim.

Hi thank you for replying. I am at the top of band four.
I didn't expect them to match my wage but did expect them to give me top of band 3.
Looks like I am going to have to start the whole discussion with them again which I an not looking forward to as I got a rather snappy email from the woman in HR when I queried it last time ??

It is not up to HR though it is a decision for your new Manager who is also presumably one of the people on your interview panel?

If you are currently top of Band 4 moving to a Band 3 Post then I would expect you to get paid top of Band 3 from starting your new post, assuming no break in Service? And also not a completely different area?

Have you resigned from your old Post yet? If not then wait until this is sorted before you do!

It may be that your new Manager is unaware of what HR are saying - could you give them a call to clarify (recommend also getting any agreement in writing / email too).
