Summons cost - council tax

We have had a summons (a date next month) for non-payment of Council Tax - for a sum just under £200.00, so it isn't a huge sum, but we have to be careful of our Bank account. There are other extenuating circumstances which I needn't go into. Also, a recent bill for the coming year mentioned the balance owing, but didn't mention urgency or threaten proceedings.

We have just paid, on-line, the balance on this year's account. However, the Summons mentions a Summons Cost of £50.00. Does anyone know if the Council has the power to waive the Summons Costs if it thinks fit? The covering note mentions the need to pay it all, even if appealing. But right now this is very hard.

I'm just about to set up a DD for next year - which will at least avoid the situation we're now in. We don't receive any reduction in the bill.

I deal with Council Tax. As long as you have paid the balance before the court date the council should cancel the summons and costs. You will need to speak to them though as someone will need to go into your account and cancel them, it won't happen automatically.
