...I should be swinging from the chandeliers, right? Well no.

He's just beginning divorce proceedings from my step mum. Her new solicitor has told her to go after all of his assets and he'd like to 'give' me his £36k savings. We are looking to do our loft so were going to ask for a loan, quite legitimately. However, this all makes me feel a bit uneasy.

Any experts on how his could work? I've told him to speak to his solicitor.

I don't think it's that easy. If she can prove he gave away money to avoid a divorce settlement he could be in trouble. It's tempting to take the money but think twice before getting involved.

Unless he's got the money saved under his bed, there will be a paper trail, won't there?

My thoughts entirely, I suspect he's being a little naïve, hence suggesting he speaks to his lawyer.

I'm also loathe to get drawn in to the whole thing. BUT, if we can legitimately take a loan to do our loft...I will obviously take the money Grin

He needs to talk to his solicitor
but recent rulings may mean that he has the right to support you
and in the scheme of divorces, £36k is not much
