Just checked my credit history and got a minor shock

I appear to have taken out a £650 unsecured loan with a company called Gresham - and then repaid it every month and have now cleared it.

Except I have never heard of Gresham, haven't borrowed money since 2001 when I briefly had a store card and definitely have not had any repayments leaving my account.

Its really weird. Surely if it was ID fraud they wouldn't bother paying it? Could this be the precursor to a really big loan they won't pay?

There seem to be loads of companies called Gresham as well so no idea which one Very confused and not sure what to do next

Contact the credit reference agency and explain the problem to them. It could just be some kind of mix up, rather than an attempted fraud.

Bramshott · 17/03/2015 13:47

It's not a phone contract is it? The ones where you pay off the phone over a number of months count as a 'loan' apparently.

listsandbudgets · 17/03/2015 13:51

Not that Bramshot - for reasons I wont bore you wth my mobile is in DPs name.

Mrssquirrel I've raised a dispute with the referenace agency but they wiull take 28 days to resolve it

Car insurance maybe?

That gets credit checked as a 'loan'.

PiggyBeekman · 17/03/2015 14:04

It's probably insurance - home or car, that you have taken out as a monthly payment. Most insurance policies are underwritten by a 'name' that's different than the company you took it out with.

listsandbudgets · 17/03/2015 14:28

But would it show up as an unsecured loan Piggybeekman? Also tend to save through the year and pay in a lump sum as it usually works out cheaper than direct debit Confused

If you don't mind me asking, how did you check your history.
I was wondering about looking at that Noddle one.
Does it go all the way back?

babyiwantabump · 17/03/2015 15:15

Barclays home insurance is this company apparently

dementedpixie · 17/03/2015 16:10

Noddle is a bit rubbish and doesn't show quite a few of my credit cards, etc

InfinitySeven · 17/03/2015 16:12

Noddle is rubbish. Look at Experian or Equifax, which are the main ones used, or ideally both.

Both have free trials, but they can be a pain to cancel. You can order a copy of your credit report every year for a pound or two, too. They post it to you and it takes a few days.

SisterMoonshine · 17/03/2015 16:29

Thankyou.

listsandbudgets · 17/03/2015 23:32

That's interesting Babyiwantabump I used to insure with Barclays but they became extortionate and I went to mor than 3 years ago. This loan was only paid off a few days ago Confused

Will have to wait and seee what the agency say

It's most likely someone else's, whose details have got mixed up with yours in the system. The best thing to do is contact the credit reference agencies - Call Credit, Experian and Equifax - and lodge notices of correction. These tell anyone looking at your credit file that you're disputing that this was your debt (although the fact that it's paid off in full would, ironically, benefit your credit score).

I'd be amazed if it were fraud. Fraudulently taken out loans are barely ever paid in any way whatsoever.

DanTheMortgageMan · 11/11/2019 07:17

Hi everyone - I found this thread by Googling Gresham Loans as I wasn't sure what it was either. Having dug a little deeper it seems that Gresham Loans is normally Barclays Home Insurance. Hope that helps!
