Think we have been the victim of SCAM or IDENTY FRAUD. Please advice

DP got a letter today from an International Debt Collection Agency demanding payment for £354.75. No idea what it was for and first impulse was to phone their number based in Liechenstein. Alarm bells started ringing. Quick google and cannot find this International Company listed anywhere!!!

The company he is supposed to owe money to does exist. Research on google suggests that this could be identiy fraud or a scam designed to get you to phone a costly number. We will contact trading standard on Mon but wanted to know if any of you had anything similar.

Have you googled for their phone number? Probably a scam, not identity fraud. At least, that's my first guess.

Will do

If you can not contain your curiousity, call them from a payphone, guarantee you won't get through.

The letter even tells you that you won't get through but to keep trying. No pay phones near me.

Ignore it.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/10/2006 18:48

Does it have any information on it? Other than your DP's name and address? Any claim of who the debt is for? How do they want him to pay them?

Can you type in some of the letter details? Like the name of the debt collection agency? Or its address?

NotQuiteCockney · 28/10/2006 18:50

The detail about probably not getting through really makes me think it's a premium number scam. Lichtenstein is a popular country for these ...

Cappuccino · 28/10/2006 18:50

take it to trading standards

if it's a scam they may well have already heard of it

disemboweledbint · 28/10/2006 18:57

scam not identity theft. you can easily get people's names and addresses all above board through internet people finder sites.

DH had one as well, from a company in london saying he'd rung a premium rate no off his orange phone, anyhow I kicked off at the 'debt' company got no joy so basically went to trading standards (they were after a fair wack) and TS said it was a company which was doing the rounds so to speak and to ignore it - I did and nothing further happened. althou this was a UK company.

where is the company he 'owes' money to, and have u used them, I recon it's prob a scam but if you're really concerned do a credit check on yourselves with experian and equifax I think they're only £2 each and I think can be done online.
