could you ever lie in court?

totally hypothetical - honest guv - if, as an honest law-abiding person you had a moment of stupidity (let's say, for example, getting your recycling muddled up, speeding in an absent-minded moment) and you ended up hauled up - infront of Cod, perhaps. Let's assume - regardless of the outcome of the case - you are mortified, racked with guilt, have learnt your lesson, are terrified of a criminal record and would NEVER do it again. ie being found guilty would serve no particular additional purpose coz you've SO been through the mill any way. just supposing you could cover your back - would you? could you?

If I thought I could I probably would

mascaraohara · 25/10/2006 20:22

yes I would.

foxinsocks · 25/10/2006 20:23

nah

but then I'm a bit of a 'hands up it was me' type person

7up · 25/10/2006 20:23

im a terrible liar, i fidget too much and twiddle with whatever i can get my hands on so i couldnt do it

BATtymumma · 25/10/2006 20:23

if there was no identifiable victim then possibly.

southeastastra · 25/10/2006 20:24

i think my body language would give it away too like 7up

Greensleeves · 25/10/2006 20:24

No, I would be really obvious

I'd like to think I could lie to protect a family member though - I am a better liar when I don't feel guilty about it

SSSandy · 25/10/2006 20:25

I'm not black and white about this. I wouldn't lie regarding some petty crime of my own or to cover anyone guilty of rape or murder or assault. However, I'm not 100 percent sure what I would do if it was a case of a very good friend whose livelihood would be endangered by having a criminal record (and not the cases I listed above). If I did lie, I wouldn't do it easily. It would be a very difficult thing for me to do.

If being found guilty of something I'd done meant I would be imprisoned and therefore separated from dd, I expect I would lie TBH. Thankfully haven't been put to the test yet!

hatwoman · 25/10/2006 20:25

I couldn't. I'd be TERRIFIED. I can't lie about finishing off the Nutella.

LadyHeatherMillsMcCartney · 25/10/2006 20:27

charliecat · 25/10/2006 20:27

I dont think id lie to cover someone elses arse, but I would my own

SueW · 25/10/2006 20:28

No. I would never sleep easy again.

TheDaVinciCod · 26/10/2006 17:32

why?

hypothetically

zippitippitoes · 26/10/2006 17:35

yes why?

it's an odd kind of thought to pop into your head isn't it?

TheDaVinciCod · 26/10/2006 17:35
Hmm
zippitippitoes · 26/10/2006 17:36

I was agreeing with cod rather then saying yes i would lie by the way!

CountessDracula · 26/10/2006 17:37

God yes
I am a raving crim at heart

Blu · 26/10/2006 17:37

I could do it - I'm good at lying convincingly.

But I probably wouldn't. I might eek out the truth a bit if it was purely about me, and about something like re-cycling or tv license.

But I would never never lie as a witness (on either side), or if I had done something to harm someone, or if it was somehting I felt guilty about.

I am answerable to my shame.

I try never to do anything that I would be ashamed to write in a diary and have someone else read. That is my 'benchmark test'. (I don't actually keep a diary)

TheDaVinciCod · 26/10/2006 17:37

i ama sure we get loads
well we certainly get oe every time poeple say " i never ususaly speed"
we had a woman my age in who was facing 12 points
had had 5 lots of 3 points and hse was only early thrities
a dn she wrote a letter saying hse was a safe and concientious driver
er dddddddddddddddder

TheDaVinciCod · 26/10/2006 17:38

thing is they often dont think they are lying its a matter of interpretations
eg did oyu INTEDN to run off out of the taxi and not pay?

they may say no meanign ithey intendied to pay the next day for eg

LadyUndetrun · 26/10/2006 17:40

i like Blu's benchmark test. i think thats how i operate too (but more eloquently put)

Hideehi · 26/10/2006 17:50

Mmmmmmmm

Yes

SueW · 26/10/2006 20:24

I even feel racked with guilt when I make an honest mistake e.g.

On the day before my car ins was due to renew - early Oct - I rang ins company as I hadn't had renewal docs through. I know their policy is to rollover anyway but suddenly realised I hadn't heard from them and didn't know cost. They sent me duplicate docs and a covering letter saying due to circs there was no charge.

Then yesterday filing bank statements and bills I ofund the unopened original letter. Felt awful about my lack of organisational skills.

VermiciousKnid · 26/10/2006 20:25

no, i couldn't

dh always jokes about me and rules

says i should have a whistle to blow at naughty people

catnip · 26/10/2006 21:04

no way - I'm the world's worst liar - and I'd be waiting for a knock at the door for the next 25 years
