I hope this makes sense - am on my phone:

Tried to take cash out yesterday (Saturday) and machine said 'insufficient funds'. It printed a mini-statement which showed I was £50 over my limit. When I looked at the print out it showed that the standing orders I have set to come out on the 1st were dated tomorrow (Mon 2nd) but had already been taken on 28th and pushed me over the limit. Dh had put money into my account on 27th but after 3.30pm cut off, meaning it will clear on Monday in time to cover the direct debits. Can I contest the charges as this is around £400 they've taken early?

Payments always come out the friday before if standing orders/direct debits fall on a weekend/bank holiday.

Viviennemary · 01/03/2015 11:35

That seems to be the rule. It does sound unfair though. Money going in delayed. Money coming out not delayed. Hmm

switchitoff · 01/03/2015 11:39

If you can, change the date of the direct debits so this doesn't happen again. I have all my dds coming out on the 5th, because there is always this issue with them being taken before the end of the month if the end of the month falls at the weekend.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 01/03/2015 11:39

Any bank who still has a cut of for cash that is before close of business is either using technology out of the ark or taking the piss (it's almost always the latter). Regardless I'd be looking to move to a more accommodating bank.

As for the charges do contact them and ask if anything can be done. Don't threaten you'll leave if not, don't demand they do it and don't get angry because none of that works and it's not the fault of the poor person on the phone/in the branch. Ask nicely, set out the facts of the case (not due out until Monday, money paid in Friday etc) and if they say they can't help ask if it would be worth talking to the manager (but ask in such a way that your polite but you're not taking no for an answer).

Then if you still don't get anywhere make a formal complaint. Again factual, unemotional but this time in writing.

I expect they'll refund.

thatstoast · 01/03/2015 11:40

If you've had no similar issues before, you could as the bank to remove charges as a gesture of good will. Were you already in your overdraft though? As you say 'over limit' rather than 'into overdraft'. They might be less inclined to help you if your account isn't usually in credit but it's always worth asking.

dementedpixie · 01/03/2015 11:43

I doubt that you will get charged as the money going in will also be dated 2nd March once it goes through. Payments due out on Monday always show as going through at the weekend. Could he not have done an Internet payment to the account as they are done the same day if both banks use the faster payments system

SoonToBeSix · 01/03/2015 11:44

Yes normal for them to come out but I would imagine the charges will automatically reverse.

CantBeBotheredThinking · 01/03/2015 11:46

When you say challenge the charges have you actually been charged as yet? This sounds similar to the way a mini statement would show for me but I wouldn't get charged.

gallicgirl · 01/03/2015 11:47

You're wrong about payments coming out before the due date if the due date is at the weekend or a bank holiday. They should come out the following working day i.e. Monday 2nd March.

Phone and contest the charges and point out that it is their error.

SurlyCue · 01/03/2015 11:50

I think it mut depend on the bank. I am with halifax and mine always wait til the monday to come out of the account.

loudarts · 01/03/2015 11:58

I'm with barclays and mine don't come out until the Monday, when I was with natwest they always came out early though.

treaclesoda · 01/03/2015 12:00

In the OP you mention standing orders, but also direct debits.

I'm not entirely sure about the standing orders, but if you have a direct debit set up to be collected on the 1st of the month, they can't collect it on an earlier date unless they give you notice (normally ten days), it is part of the direct debit guarantee.

treaclesoda · 01/03/2015 12:01

By which I mean you would have good grounds to raise it with them and explain that you weren't expecting the money to be taken out of your account on that date, which is why you weren't prepared for it.

thefirstmrsrochester · 01/03/2015 12:11

RBS by any chance? I no longer bank with them for this (and plenty other reasons). Complain to get the charges refunded and also, given your husband transferred money to your account which they have not made available, have they left you in financial hardship? If so, add that to your complaint too.

adarkwhisperinthewoodwasheard · 01/03/2015 12:27

Hi. Thanks for your responses. It is an overdraft but it's always paid back each month and I'll be in credit. It's an account with a monthly fee too. They are s/os not direct debits (sorry). Previously if the first of the month is at the weekend then the money has always been taken next working day so this is the first time this has happened. And yes, it is RBS. I'll go into branch tomorrow and find out why this has happened.

I've had issues with natwest. Mortgage should have come out on the Monday, but the money was not available for my tesco delivery which ended up being cancelled. I got paid on the Monday but the money obviously isn't available until then. The bank were rubbish. My mortgage company (the Nottingham) don't recieve the mo eu until the Monday.
They gave me some bollocks about Saturday being a non banking day but you could take money out, and Monday, a banking day, you couldn't make withdrawals!!

dementedpixie · 01/03/2015 14:09

the T&C's say this:

The amount of funds you can withdraw during the week, in the evening and overnight, at weekends and on bank holidays (referred to as
available funds) will take account of standing orders, Direct Debits, debit card transactions, forward dated payments and salary payments due on the next business day.

Please remember that some instructions for payments to be made from your account (including payments by cheque, Direct Debit and some standing orders) are processed during the night before the payment is due. To be sure that a payment can be made, you should ensure that you have sufficient available funds in your account by 14:30 on the business day the payment is due to be made. For example, if a Direct Debit is due to be
paid on a Monday, you should make sure that you have sufficient available funds by 14:30 on the Monday. You will need to ensure that you allow enough time for the funds to be processed into your account.

(This suggests to me that you will not get charged as the money that was paid in will show on the account tomorrow before 2.30pm)

Also says:

Do we charge Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fees over the weekend and Bank Holidays?

Unarranged Overdraft Usage Fees are charged for all consecutive periods of non-working days (weekends and/or Bank Holidays) if the unarranged overdraft is over £6 and is not cleared by close of business on the next working day.

(As money has already been paid in and will show tomorrow you will not be charged if the unarranged overdraft has been cleared)

dementedpixie · 01/03/2015 14:15

have also found this:

It is the weekend, why do I have less money than I should have?

If you find that you have less money available to you over the weekend or on a bank holiday than you expect, it may be because our systems currently take account of payments due to leave your account on the following business day, usually a Monday. This might be for example a direct debit or standing order (but does not include outstanding debit card transactions).

This should not be happening as the funds remain yours until the payment is due, and we are changing our processes to stop this from happening in the future. Until we have made the necessary changes, please call us on 0800 151 0405 or visit a branch if you need access to any funds that have been debited for this reason. This service is available on Saturdays in branch during normal opening hours and all weekend over the phone.

But please note that, subject of course to any overdraft facility you have previously agreed with us, you will need to make sure you have paid funds into your account by 2.30pm on the day your regular payment is due. This will ensure all your payments due are paid, and you avoid any unnecessary charges.

I would ring them on the highlighted number above and see if they can help if you need access to money today
