Tax Credits and backdating

I recently started work,(first week of February), but have yet to make a claim for Tax Credits as my boss hasn't yet been able to get the PAYE number to me, due to the fact I work nights, and thus rarely see her. I get my first payslip this week (feels like something of a celebration itself) and will be putting in my claim then.

What I'm wondering is, will my tax credits be backdated to the day I start work, or just the day I make the claim? Also, for those who had an existing Child Tax Credit claim when they opened their WTC claim, how long did you find it took them to process your claim?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help :)

They will backdate 1month so you should be fine :)

They backdate 31 days from the date they receive your claim. If you are already claiming you can declare a change of circumstances over the phone and they should make the necessary adjustments within 2-3 weeks. If it's a brand new claim call up now for a form as they can take 1-2 weeks to send it out to you.

I think there's a high likelihood of HMRC disputing the main residence claim if the only period of occupation is a week between the sale having been agreed and actually going through. There has been a case that went through the tribunal and got the relief with two weeks of actual occupation but what the tribunal looked at was the intention of the person claiming the relief. In that case the person always intended to live there but a change in family circumstances meant he couldn't afford it.
