Revenue and Customs are after DP

I have changed my name for this.
Basically the history is that I met DP in 1999 when he lived in another town and, (unbeknownst to me, obviously) he hadn't paid tax on his freelance earnings for a couple of years prior to this.
He moved to be with me in 2000 and was unable to find work other than scanty bits and bobs for a long time. It was at this point in time that I discovered about the tax, but we were in serious dire straights with everything that we simply kept our heads down and just hoped.

As of two years ago he has been in proper salaried employment after having been a student for 2 years, so things are smoother now.

However, the Revenue and Customs people have now contacted him about his employment in 1996/1997. They have just said they have evidence that he was in receipt of income then without paying tax.

I have told him to just tell them everything and fill out all the relevant forms for the last 9 years. But what can we expect next? How bad will it get?

We approximate VERY roughly that it will be a debt in the region of £15 ..but that doesn't include any interest or penalties that would be owing . We are bricking ourselves....

Something like this happened to DH recently and the only way forwards is to be honest, you may be able to get them to write some of it off. I would say get a good accountant, but we paid a fortune for one and in the end, I got the tax bill down without any help from them.

That is what I have said to him. I am just scared of them though.

What was the course of events after the initial contact they made with you? He is just at the initial talks on the phone stage. Will they just ask him to fill out all the forms for all those years? Will they just accept the information on the forms or will they take the investigations deeper? We really do not have anything to hide after this - this is the last/only big skeleton in our closet now - but I'd like it just to be a question of filling out forms rather than interviews with accountants and then them going through my affairs too.

there are 100 quid penalties for late submission of tax returns each year... so that should be about 600 quid!! Are you sure it is only £15? Did he only earn 40 quid that year?

I worked for HMRC and they will want the total repaying but can be very flexible on the terms...

Best to be very honest with them.... they can investigate if they have suspicions that you have avoided tax over the subsequent years... good luck!!

Oops, no, not £15, I meant £15k! LOL

Is it just £100 per year? Is there no interest on top of that?
