Changing broadband and phone provider

This may not be the right place but will give it a go! Currently have phone and broadband with BT and realise this is probably the most expensive way of doing it. But, if I change do I pay line rental to BT as well as the new provider, or does that depend on the supplier. If I end up paying 2 lots of line rental, how does that work out any cheaper?? (Although it doesn't make sense that I would pay 2 lots of rental....) I've put of changing for months as I can't work out how it works. Any help would be great.

Thanks

If you switch to a provider that does phone and broadband as a package, you pay line rental to your new provider. Some will let you pay the linerental part yearly upfront which can save a bit but if you move home it is non-refundable.

the ultra-low prices for broadband that you see advertised are contigent on paying line rental, which is in the small print at the end of the ad.

with BT, you are hopefully paying the line rental saver -if not, you really are spending way too much. That is non-refundable so you might as well wait until it runs out, then look around to change supplier. You then pay line rental to the new supplier instead.

if you move house the contract goes with you.

if you aren't on the line rental saver and paying month by month, AND you aren't in contract with BT, you can change whenever you like. I checked recently and can save about £7 a month by going to Sky (for unlimited broadband and unlimited phone calls). So as soon as my BT contract/line rental saver expires, that's the plan.
